A new AMD processor hits the streets
AMD is releasing a pair of new 45 watt processors today aimed at the lower power, low heat and low noise markets. That could be business, HTPC or anything else you might imagine up.

Intel is now pushing a dual-socket platform with support for two quad-core processors as being the ultimate media creation computer. Does it hit the mark and can the software keep up with 8-cores of processing power?

Intel's Pentium E2140 is a stripped down Conroe with a cut rate price. The L2 cache becomes 1MB, and is shared between the 2 cores, and the FSB is reduced to 800MHz. HotHardware's testing showed it to be about 10% slower than the C2D E6300, and about half the price. They also pushed the 1.6GHz chip up to 2.9GHz with stock cooling.

HotHardware caught a glimpse of Intel's 8 core processor, the motherboard that it will sit on, and a few benchmarks as well. Luckily they brought a camera so they can share. Except for memory bandwidth, this new multicore CPU cleans up with Sandra benchmarks. It obciously has a lot of power behind it, it can do a Cinebench rendering pass in 2/3's of the time it takes a C2E QX6800.

HotHardware has had the chance to see some benchmarks on the upcoming 45nm chip in both quad and dual core flavours. They are compared to the current champion, the QX6800, so you get a good comparison. These are still a while away from release, so the chips may perform better by the time they are ready.
