While listening in on the AMD analyst day going on right now in Austin, TX, AMD introduced something more than a little exciting.  When sharing a roadmap of the desktop outlook for AMD's processors through 2007 and 2008, a platform known as "4x4" was discussed as being the ultimate enthusiast platform.  What does that include?



What you are seeing here is a dual-processor system board platform, each using dual-core processors for a total of four logical cores

AMD has offered no shortage of choice with Socket AM-2 offerings.  From the Sempron 3000+ 1.60GHz with a 256KB Cache at $75.00 to the top of the line Athlon 64 FX-62 Dual Core Processor, running at 2.8GHz, with a pair of 1MB caches, and a 1G

This news hit me like a ton of bricks -- is this even remotely possible?  According to this article at Forbes.com, AMD (yes the processor designer) might be looking into buying ATI (yes the graphics company).  According to the article it would be a move that would "benefit the overall graphics industry," though I don't immediately see how.

Check out the A64 FX-62 and the X2 5000+ at PC Stats.  They are impressed by the performance, calling the FX-62 the fastest processor they ever tested.

I have just finished up my review of the Athlon 64 FX-62 processor, the first CPU to offer the AM2 processor socket and DDR2 memory for the AMD platform.

The performance delta between the AM2 and S939 parts of matching frequency and cache sizes is nearly indistinguishable in my testing.  The move from DDR to DDR2 memory speeds was never going to bring massive of amounts of
