The ThinkPad series has been updated with new models, the T61 & R61 as well as the X61 & X61s.  XYZ Computing has had the pleasure of trying out both the ultra mobile X61s as well as the larger X61.  They include all of the features you would expect the successor of the X60 series to have, as well as some handy new features.  Not to mention updated hardware.

MobiTV is the new way to get TV on your cell phone, and they offer service in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and the UK.  Ars Technica tried out the service on Cingular, and found 43 channels to watch while on the go.  As you might expect, changing channels takes a bit of waiting, as it has to find that signal, but there was some onerous waiting times for Ars when they were simply watching a program.  Get more info on the service in the full article.

Cutting corners on laptops

The LCDs on laptops really can't hold a candle to the desktop versions.  It isn't a size thing, so much as brightness, response rate and clarity.  Rather than depend on eyeballing to judge the difference, AnandTech tests 4 laptops against a Gateway desktop LCD.  The results are rather enlightening.

Sony updates their VAIO

Sony has never been considered the makers of the best laptops around, but their VAIO series is the most portable laptop, without crossing the line into a UMPC.  This incarnation, the Sony VAIO TZ weighs in at 2.62lbs, and comes with a 1.06GHz C2D, Windows Vista Professional, 1GB of DDR2, an 80GB ATA HDD, a multipurpose DVD RW/R and integrated Intel graphics.  The display is 11.1" with a resolution of 1,366x768, which should be enough to let you see without a magnifying glass.  As Coo

DigiTimes has a look at the newest thing from LG.Phillips, a flexible colour LCD in A4 size (14.1" across).  By placing the TFT on metal foil rather that on glass, you get a flexible screen that is hopefully also durable.  Drop by and give it a look, if this catches on then ebooks and online newspapers will be a lot nicer to read.
