Mommy, where do hard drives go when they die?

The Tech Report has linked to a .pdf article on the failure rate of hard drives.  Not many independent studies have been done, so it is hard to say how accurate manufacturers MTBF stats are.  Google ought to know as they use an enormous amount of HDDs and they are constantly running, and they are the ones who did the research.

The front page is nice, but the forums are so much better

If you are still looking for info on Vista one of our members has compiled a list of links that should cover almost any question you might come up with, so go visit Ezzo's Vista thread, and don't forget to thank him.  That doesn't mean we have given up on older OSes and we won't, because we know so many tips and tricks we would hate to see them disappear (well except for ME).  If you have troubles getting a CD ROM to work under Win2K, then read through here.&nbs

Gears of War on the PC

According to this article on HEXUS, Gears of War may make it to the PC ... when enough people have the hardware to run it.  Of course, they neglect to mention what kind of system will be needed to play Gears on the PC, but somehow the idea that a 3GHz machine with 4GBs of RAM and dual 8800GTXs can't match the performance of a console seems unlikely.

When VIA first introduced the EPIA they ran a little slower than most desktops, but not to the point of being crippled.  It's hard to know if they realized the response they would get from the modding community, but it has been huge!  If you aren't fully aware of what people are doing, just check out VIA Arena's current mod contest.

Drop by Digital Trends for a look at the high end of Logitech keyboards, the DiNovo Edge.  Made of a Plexiglass composite and 11mm thick, it will stand up to a lot of abuse without needing to be built like a tank, or needing a cord since it uses Bluetooth.  The trackpad is certainly an interesting addition, and as it only needs to be recharged once a month you won't find yourself constantly stuck without a keyboard.

Psst ... did ya hear the one about the new G80's?

The XMod from Creative is essentially a driverless external USB soundcard.  It has 2 modes, Crystalizer and CMSS-3D, the first of which attempts to fix the horrible things that happen when you compress audio and the second takes a basic 2 channel signal in interpolates a full surround signal.  If you have an ear that can tell what level compression was used in making an MP3, drop by t-break for a look at this little device.
