Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD Full Review - Samsung Ups the Ante
Yapt (yet another performance test) is a benchmark recommended by a pair of drive manufacturers and was incredibly difficult to locate as it hasn't been updated or used in quite some time. That doesn't make it irrelevant by any means though, as the benchmark is quite useful. It creates a test file of about 100 MB in size and runs both random and sequential read and write tests with it while changing the data I/O size in the process. The results are a good look at overall drive performance.
Yapt gave us some odd results here. The written data is a repeating pattern, so it's expected to see the SandForce Vertex 3 and Intel 520 units pegging at SATA 6Gb/sec bendwidth on the writing tests. What we didn't expect to see was the Vertex 4 surpassing all Samsung units on the random write test. When I looked into this further, it turns out the OCZ unit happens to be optimized for the *exact* write pattern our Yapt test uses to perform its writes. That same optimization appears to have caused it some heartache on the random read test.
