We arrived early Thursday morning to see crowded lines of gamers registering for the BYOC at Quakecon 2010. This year, PC Perspective is one of the featured sponsors and we are also hosting the hardware workshop and case mod contest. Quakecon has been around for more than 10 years and the best part about it is that it’s free for gamers to come together and play their favorite PC titles. There are also thousands of dollars in prizes and giveaways and Ventrilo is also hooking up two lucky people with 2011 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Coupes!

Todd Hollenshead, co-owner and CEO of id Software, kicked off the event and thanked the gamers and sponsors for their participation and support. While there was no mention of any Doom 4 demos, Hollenshead did tout the $25,000 Quake Live Masters and the $25,000 Quake Live Capture the Flag Championships. He also announced that the entire id Software and Bethesda Studios gaming package would be available on Steam for $69.99 until the end of Quakecon on Sunday. The crowd seemed a little less enthusiastic than last year, but overall the atmosphere was pretty electric.

ZeniMax Media Inc., parent company of game publisher Bethesda Softworks, also announced it has completed the acquisition of veteran game developer Arkane Studios. Arkane Studios is best known for their work in Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (PC version), and has collaborated on a number of high profile game projects, including Bioshock 2. After people registered for the BYOC, they get all their gear tagged so no one can take off with their computer equipment. It’s a pretty efficient setup, and they proudly announced during the kickoff event that their registration times were cut to five minutes per person.
