MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt Motherboard Review

Subject: Motherboards
Manufacturer: MSI

Overclocking Results

MSI OC Genie

MSI's OC Genie BIOS-based overclocking solution was able to boot the system stable at a 4.2GHz CPU speed (42x CPU ratio with 100MHz base clock) with memory running at its rated 2133MHz speed as well. The system was rock solid stable at these speeds. System stability was determined by running a combination of LinX and FurMark over with LinX running for 500 loops with Memory set to All and FurMark running at 1280x1024 resolution and 2x MSAA in stress test mode.

Manual Overclocking

Using manual settings in the MSI UEFI BIOS via the OC page, I was able stabilize the system at a 103MHz base clock with a 4.3GHz CPU speed and memory running at 1922MHz. System stability was tested over a 10 hour period with LinX running for 500 loops with Memory set to All and FurMark running at 1280x1024 resolution and 2x MSAA in stress test mode. Note that the system overclock would not stabilize without active cooling (via a 120mm fan) running over the board's heatpipe.

I bought this board when I built my system last Christmas and I am very happy with it. I am not using the Thunderbolt port at this point, but I wanted my computer to be ready for when Thunderbolt is being used more.

I've had this board for a few weeks now and the OC Genie really impressed me. I have no hesitation to recommend this board

Hi,

I am building a pc and there are a number of cables from the front panel of the pc case (usb, pc power etc). I can find all the ports to connect these cables to on the motherboard (MSI Z77A-G45) except the SD/MMR cable. Do you know where this connects to on this motherboard?

Thanks in advance.

Mick.
