The KT400A chipset from VIA, which we initially reviewed back in March, is finally becoming available in the retail channels. While motherboard manufacturers had it easy to upgrade from KT400 motherboard to KT400A boards due to the pin compatibility of VIA’s series of chipsets, most were not as eager to move on to the next chipset as they still had a healthy stock of KT400 motherboards. And now with the release of the KT600 chipset from VIA alongside the release of the Athlon XP 3200+ processor, motherboard manufacturers are having to decide to push ahead with the KT400A motherboards or wait for the KT600 chipset to begin mass production.

In either case, the KT400A motherboards are not to be overlooked if you are going to be building a new system or upgrading a current one. In this article we take a look at 9 motherboards based on the KT400A chipset and how they perform compared to each other in terms of features and speed.
