The AMD FirePro V9800 4GB Card

Don't worry, your V9800 card will have the name silk screened on correctly
The FirePro V9800 has the same basic design as the V8800 we saw previously with a svelte red-on-black color scheme.

The V7800 is actually just a tiny bit longer, though has only a single slot cooler, while the V8800 and V9800 look identical from this angle.

The connections on the V9800 include six mini-DisplayPort connections and make the card very similar looking to the AMD Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition graphics cards for the gaming market.    The 3-pin connection is used for 3D display synchronization.

The V9800 supports CrossFire for accelerating GPU performance while the other pin out is there for connecting to the FirePro S400 framelock/genlock card.

The power requirements are a single 6-pin PCIe and a single 8-pin PCIe connection.

In relation to the V8800 we reviewed much earlier in the year, the V9800 supports two additional displays and moves from full-size DisplayPort connections to mini-DisplayPort.  Obviously that raises the issue of display adapters...

And AMD has done well with the professional lineup of cards and in particular the V9800.  In the box with the graphics board there will be 1 active mini-DP to dual-link DVI adapter and 5 active mini-DP to single-link DVI adapters.

This will allow users to connect all six monitors to their displays right out of the box though five of them will only support resolutions as high as 1920x1200.  The single dual-link adapter will run the 30-in displays that are much more common in the professional world than the consumer one.  You can see in the shot above that the wire jungle will get pretty messy behind a fully decked out V9800 but the end result of 6 panels on a single board is worth the effort.
