A monitor for those that like it long
We take a look at the magnificent 3440×1440 monitor that might just change your mind about 21:9 displays.
It takes a lot to really impress someone that sits in front of dual 2560×1600 30-in IPS screens all day, but the LG 34UM95 did just that. With a 34-in diagonal 3440×1440 resolution panel forming a 21:9 aspect ratio, built on LG IPS technology for flawless viewing angles, this monitor creates a work and gaming experience that is basically unmatched in today's market. Whether you need to open up a half-dozen Excel or Word documents, keep an eye on your Twitter feed while looking at 12 browsers or run games at near Eyefinity/Surround levels without bezels, the LG 34UM95 is a perfect option.

Originally priced north of $1200, the 34UM95 and many in LG's 21:9 lineup have dropped in price considerably, giving them more avenues into users' homes. There are obvious gaming advantages to the 34-in display compared to a pair of 1920×1080 panels (no bezel, 20% more pixels) but if you have a pair of 2560×1440 screens you are going to be giving up a bit. Some games might not handle 21:9 resolutions well either, just as we continue to see Eyefinity/Surround unsupported occasionally.
Productivity users will immediately see an improvement, both for those us inundated with spreadsheets, web pages and text documents as well as the more creative types with Adobe Premiere timelines. I know that Ken would definitely have approved us keeping this monitor here at the office for his use.

No doubt it’s a beautiful
No doubt it’s a beautiful monitor, for games, movies and productivity, but still i think it’s expensive, i mean for almost 1000 euro, i can buy 3 1080p 27″ monitors, even more immersive gaming experience.
I have been wanting one of
I have been wanting one of these for so long, but they are so expensive 🙁 This will probably be the next thing I save up for, or a Dell XPS13.
I don’t see a Ken gold award
I don’t see a Ken gold award or Ken seal of approval.
I also went from a HP 30″
I also went from a HP 30″ LP3065 2560×1600 monitor to this screen.. Long story why (I still have and love the HP 30″ monitor), but this definitely puts having a PC on a new level.
Some people complain about backlight bleed on this monitor — but I see that as an IPS trait; if you’re used to larger IPS’s that you sit close to, this won’t bother you at all.
The wide viewing takes a few days to get used to (or at least it did for me), but feels awesome when you are used to it.
Occasionally there are deals for $750 USD, which makes this expensive but a lot better.
Does it distort the image at
Does it distort the image at all as you get close to the edges. Like a fish eye effect?
On most 3D game engines, yes.
On most 3D game engines, yes. Elite Dangerous had this a bit (although you can clearly see more of the cockpit usefully than you can on a 16:9 – it’s not distracting). Battlefield 4 had this, although I haven’t taken the time (yet) to mess with the FOV settings for that game.
Thank you.
Thank you.
i really hate the term
“21:9”
i really hate the term
“21:9” it tells you absolutely nothing
2.33 to 1 tells you exactly what it is 2.33 times wider then it’s height
scope on films is 2:35 to 1
this monitor is almost a perfect aspect ratio
math is not that hard. 9 goes
math is not that hard. 9 goes into 21 twice so that’s 2, the remaining 3:9 is 1/3 which is obviously .3repeater thus 2.333…
however that’s not actually right, 21:9 is a generalisation purposely used to show that it is wider than a 16:9, its actually 64/27 which is 2.370
Get a calculator and divide
Get a calculator and divide 3440 with 1440? See what it actually is?
Also, see what aspect ratios are the other 21:9 resolutions in existance:
1792×768
2560×1080
5120×2160
Note: It is possible that the
Note: It is possible that the pixels themselves (or their relative spacings) do not have perfectly square dimensions so calculating aspect ratio from resolution is not guaranteed to be the same as when calculated from the actual screen dimensions (ie. viewable area). The difference, if any, is likely so minute that it would be hard if not impossible to perceive…but since we are picking nits, there is a pixel aspect ratio as well as a frame aspect ratio.

reading this review on one now!. superb monitor me thinks.
Once this gets the freesync
Once this gets the freesync treatment(or gsync) then it really will be a great gaming monitor.
Well, that is once those issues wiht freesync are fixed – ghosting and below VRR range.
Curved is a fad. No
Curved is a fad. No exceptions.

Maybe.. I would have agreed
Maybe.. I would have agreed completely with this until having this monitor for a while. I could see having a slight curve on this and having it feel natural. I wouldn’t rule out a slight curve until you’ve tried it yourself.
It may be “slightly
It may be “slightly tolerable” for things like movies/TV (a really BIG TV, that is), but for gaming curved is simply useless as of right now. Because not enough of a curve to actually help, rather than distract (what it does right now). For curved to actually work for gaming, it HAS to AT LEAST match the area which currently being covered by three standard displays put on an ergonomic multimonitor stand (like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEZHBCID1Rk, for example). No curved display so far was able to offer such a wide angle, and thus curved is pretty much a useless thing all the way until there won’t appear first panel which would be able to offer that experience exactly. Once again: no curved monitor panel on the market could match three monitors on an ergonomic multimonitor stand sheer wideness of angle-wise, and thus so far useless.

This display isn’t curved.

I got the non curved version
I got the non curved version of this (34UM94) at release. It’s great for games (well, maybe not so much for the games that require you to look at a minimap at the corner of the screen 50% of the time to remain competitive), although I wish at the time I had known they were going to release curved versions as the corners of the screen are a little too far away from your centre of vision.
I also wish Freesync being incorporated into later versions of Display Port was announced sooner too…

I am waiting for a 3440×1440
I am waiting for a 3440×1440 21:9 G-Sync IPS display, I may be waiting a while but to me thats currently the perfectly display. A high end card should be able to push decent frame rates compared to straight up 4K display.
I’ll look to upgrade in >1
I’ll look to upgrade in >1 year when 3440X1440 21:9 G-Sync IPS/HPVA 144 Hz at <$750 are available. Preferably it would come factory calibrated as many fullscreen games can't use color profiles from a monitor calibrator. By then, single GPUs should be able to get 60 fps in most titles at near max settings. Also, this will give time for more games to support 21:9 aspect ratios.
I just got a nice tax return
I just got a nice tax return but have to wait for the display tech to catch up. I’m ready to drop the hammer on a titan x (I run mini itx) but my current display is a 22″ dell IPS 1080p, a little sad. I just purchased dual samsung 850 pro 1tb SSDs so the only thing I need is the display but I have to wait.
I do photo work so need an IPS display, I want to game on it so that rules out 4K and I think 21:9 is perfect for video and photo editing because the space for tools. Its also great for games too, I have a driving wheel setup and don’t want triple monitors so it would fit in.
I would buy a 21:9 monitor if
I would buy a 21:9 monitor if it was 40 inches or larger and under $1000.
would a 1 GTX 980 be enough
would a 1 GTX 980 be enough to power this? perhaps an 8GB model?
Im thinking about getting the curved version of this
