The Hammer processors from AMD have been in the head light of the hardware community for years now, ever since the technology behind the new CPUs was announced. Back in April we saw the launch of the server solution based on what is now referred to as AMD64 technology, the Opteron 8xx, 4xx and 2xx processors. Here at Amdmb.com we reviewed the Tyan Thunder K8S and the MSI K8D Master, a pair of dual processor server-class motherboards combined with the new Opteron processors. While the results for very impressive for their applications, the majority of the enthusiast community was awaiting benchmarks using AMD64 processors and an AGP graphics solution.

The opportunity was given to us by NVIDIA and AMD to test the latest release in the AMD64 processor line, the Opteron 100 series processors. These processors, coming in 140, 142 and 144 options (1.4 GHz, 1.6 GHz and 1.8 GHz respectively) are aimed at the workstation market – those users that demand the highest performance components for their occupation.

Of course, the workstation applications have much more resemblance to the enthusiast market than the server applications, and thus we can use the Opteron 144 processor tested here to get a good look at how the upcoming Athlon 64 line might perform.
