Koolance 1200W Liquid Cooled Power Supply Review

Manufacturer: Koolance

Introduction and Features

The Koolance 1,200W power supply is unique.  Not only is it one of the first PC power supplies to offer 1,200 watts of DC output, it is the first PC power supply that includes a true submersive liquid cooling system.  The Koolance 1,200W power supply housing is filled with a non-conductive coolant that directly absorbs heat from all the submerged components.  A small integrated pump circulates the coolant thru an external radiator that dissipates heat into the room air outside of the PC enclosure.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

In addition to being liquid cooled, the Koolance 1,200W PSU features all modular cables and promises high efficiency and quiet operation.  And last but not least is the extreme Koolness factor of having your very own liquid cooled 1,200W power supply!

Koolance PSU-1200ATX-12S – Main Features

  • 1,200 Watts continuous DC output (1,400W peak)

  • Four +12V outputs (up to 85A, 1020W)

  • Integrated submersive cooling system

  • Pre-filled with non-conductive liquid coolant

  • Quiet 120mm, variable speed cooling fan with blue LEDs

  • High efficiency operation (>80%)

  • All modular cables

  • (4) 6-pin PCI-E cable/connectors (SLI and CrossFire support)

  • Active PFC with universal AC input

The Koolance 1,200W power supply arrived securely packed between foam inserts inside not one, but two large corrugated cardboard boxes for added protection.

In addition to the power supply the inside box also contains 11 modular cables, a heavy duty power cord, mounting hardware, and a printed User’s Manual.

Establishing an accurate load is critical to testing and evaluating a PC power supply.  PCPerspective’s power supply test bench can place a precise 2,000 watt DC load on the PSU under test.  Each power supply is tested under controlled, real-world conditions up to its maximum rated load, using both 115 VAC and 240 VAC line voltage.  Our current suite of tests includes:

  • DC Load Regulation

  • DC Line Regulation

  • DC Cross-load (unbalanced load)

  • AC Ripple and Noise

  • Power Factor

  • Efficiency

  • Differential Temperature

  • Noise

  • Size and Weight

The Koolance 1,200W liquid cooled power supply was evaluated on both features and performance.  A full range of equipment was used to test the power supply under controlled load conditions.

  • (2) CSI3710A Programmable DC load (+3.3V and +5V ouputs)

  • (4) CSI3711A Programmable DC load (+12V1, +12V2, +12V3, and +12V4)

  • FLUKE 87-III True RMS digital multimeter (Accuracy ±0.05%)

  • Extech 380803 Power Analyzer (Accuracy ±0.5% of full scale)

  • <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Hitachi V-650F 60 MHz dual trace oscilloscope (Accuracy ±3%)

  • Powerstat Variable Autotransformer, 1.4 KVA, 0-140 VAC

  • FLUKE  52-II digital thermometer (Accuracy ±0.3ºC/0.5ºF)

  • Extech Model 407738 digital sound level meter (Accuracy ±1.5 dB)

  • AccuLab V1-10kg digital balance (Accuracy ±1g)
