Corsair may be best known for their complete line of PC memory but they have quickly earned a stellar reputation for bringing to market some excellent power supplies in recent years.  While retaining a focus on performance and reliability, Corsair’s new HX series of enthusiast grade power supplies emphasizes efficiency and quiet operation.  The HX series is now available in three different models ranging in output capacity from 520W, 620W all the way up to 1,000W.  The new HX1000W power supply features two independent secondary units along with modular cables and support for up to three high-end graphics cards.

Here is what Corsair has to say about their new HX1000W power supply:

“The Corsair HX1000W features six PCI-Express connectors, both 6-pin and 8-pin compatible, to power multiple high-end graphics cards and two EPS12V connectors for dual CPU configurations.  The truly independent dual transformer, dual rail design allows for optimum load balancing resulting in greater performance and reliability.  Industrial grade 105°C primary, secondary and solid state capacitors provide up to four times the lifespan of traditional components. 



The HX1000W not only delivers one thousand watts of clean power for the highest performance enthusiast systems, it does so at greater than 80% efficiency thanks to the double-forward switching design and multiple rail DC-to-DC converter.  Due to its best-in-class efficiency the HX1000W is able to run cool and quiet with only a single thermally controlled fan.

PSU Testing Methodology

Establishing an accurate load is critical to testing and evaluating a PC power supply.  PCPerspective’s power supply test bench can place a precise 2,000 watt DC load on the PSU under test.  Each power supply is tested under controlled, real-world conditions up to its maximum rated load (at 40ºC), using both 115 VAC and 240 VAC line voltage.  Our current suite of tests includes:

•    DC Load Regulation

•    DC Line Regulation

•    DC Cross-load (unbalanced load)

•    AC Ripple and Noise

•    Power Factor

•    Efficiency

•    Differential Temperature

•    Noise


The Corsair HX1000W power supply was evaluated on both features and performance.  A full range of equipment was used to test the power supply under controlled load conditions. 

•    (2) CSI3710A Programmable DC load (+3.3V and +5V outputs)

•    (4) CSI3711A Programmable DC load (+12V1, +12V2, +12V3, and +12V4)

•    FLUKE 87-III True RMS digital multimeter (Accuracy ±0.05%)

•    Extech 380803 Power Analyzer (Accuracy ±0.5% of full scale)

•    Hitachi V-650F 60 MHz dual trace oscilloscope (Accuracy ±3%)

•    Powerstat Variable Autotransformer, 1.4 KVA, 0-140 VAC
