Antec Neo HE 500 High Efficiency Power Supply Review

The Neo HE 500 power supply supports ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V systems and is rated for a combined, maximum output power of 500 watts with a maximum ambient temperature of 50°C.  This is an important feature and is an area where some less reputable manufactures mislead their customers by significantly limiting a power supply's full load output if the internal operating temperature exceeds 25°C.


 


The Neo HE 500 includes universal input with active PFC and provides three separate +12V outputs, each rated for up to 17A.  Voltage regulation is held to ±3% for the 3.3V, 5V, and 12V outputs.


 



 


The Neo HE 500 power supply comes securely packed in a large box and includes a power cord, mounting screws, seven modular cables, and a detailed multilingual User's Manual.


 



 


 



 


 


Triple +12V outputs


 


The Antec Neo HE 500 PSU incorporates three 12V outputs (+12V1, +12V2 and +12V3).  The following table shows the maximum rated current and what connectors are supplied by each of the +12V outputs.


 



 


Note: The maximum combined load for the +12V1, +12V2 and +12V3 outputs is 38A.


 


Higher Efficiency


 


One simple way to boost a power supplies overall efficiency is to lower the +3.3V and +5V output capacities while increasing the +12V outputs.  It's easier to efficiently convert the AC line voltage to +12 VDC than it is to the lower +3.3V and +5V outputs.  After looking at the specifications for the Neo HE 500, it appears this is in part what Antec has done to boost efficiency levels.
