The gang at Anandtech has published their tests looking at the new Opteron Socket-F processors and the new Xeon processors from Intel as well.
Some might wonder if a different - read Intel - motherboard for the Woodcrest system could have significantly altered the outcome of these tests. We do not think so. Although the Intel motherboards do tend to show slightly lower power consumption, it is not a significant difference.

While the 65nm processors from AMD should soon be hitting the streets for everyone to buy, Anandtech got a set of them a bit early and put them to the test to see if power/performance was improved.
Overall we're left with mixed feelings after playing with AMD's first 65nm chips. Power consumption is definitely reduced compared to its 90nm offerings; in our tests we saw an average reduction in total system power consumption of 14.6W thanks to the new Brisbane core.

The tech wizards at The Tech Report have compiled a review comparing the latest in Intel's server/workstation line to the Socket-F AMD Opteron processors released earlier in the year. They do a fantastic job looking at the power and performance of almost exactly configured systems and this article is definitely worth a read!

The Tech Report has linked to a couple of articles on the upcoming shift to 32nm, which comes hot on the heels of AMD's move to 65nm and Intel's upcoming 45nm process. Electric companies won't be impressed, as this will lower the power requirements of quad core systems considerably.

The Inquirer furthers the facts and FUD that surround the pending Quadfather from AMD, including the possibility of having 4 video cards, presumably running in SLI, as opposed to the ASUS P5W64 board recently reviewed by X-bit Labs. Head over to see what they've discovered, but you will have to wait a while before you find out if they are right.

It seems that the Woodcrest processor, the server / workstation version of the ever popular Core 2 Duo from Intel, is having trouble gaining ground without a solid high performance chipset.
Intel's own Greencreek platform does allow for a single PCI-E X16 slot - sufficient for a typical midrange workstation. But that is far from enough for 3D powerhouse workstation systems, where SLI or CrossFire may be mandatory to get the 3D performance required.

Way back in the day, Transmeta was the first processor company to push performance per watt indicators at the technology leaders. Of course, no one really listend to them, so look what we have now... The Crusoe processor was released in 2000 and found mild success with some vendors, but it quickly evaporated. Now they plan on cashing in on patents, like some other nit-wits we have seen.

ExtremeTech is sharing everything they know about the upcoming quad-core processor from AMD, currently known as Barcelona. Taking a different aproach than Intel, they did not widen the instruction pipe, instead optimizing the current one with a 512-entry indirect branch predictor, a 32-byte instruction fetch, a sideband stack optimizer and out-of-order load execution.
