The Tech Report examines the new P67 Express
chipset which sports 6Gbps Serial ATA ports and full-speed PCI Express 2.0 lanes. This makes it very competitive against AMD's boards which have sported both those features for a while now. Their testing showed better transfer performance over the SATA channel than AMD's 890GX chipset and a significant jump from the P55 chipset, when connected to a PCIe RAID card. Also of note was the CPU utilization, which was much higher on the AMD platform.

You are going to see a lot of P67 chipset based board reviews over the next quarter as each motherboard maker is planning on releasing a lot of variants, some numbering several dozen when you include specialized OEM boards. Choice is not a bad thing but you are going to want to research the various choices carefully and not let yourself get overwhelmed by the model numbers. One solid choice is the ASUS P8P67 WS Revolution
which combines the P67 chipset with the NF200 bridge chip which will allow properly support for Quad CrossFireX as well as 3-way and 2-way SLI.

MSI held a press conference on Tuesday night that showcased new Sandy Bridge notebooks as well as the company's motherboards based on the P67 and H67 chipsets. The stars of the party though were the new P67-based Big Bang Marshal motherboard with no less than eight (8!!) x16 PCIe slots! They didn't want to tell us what chips were at work to create all of these lanes of traffic - can't help but wonder if this is NVIDIA nForce 200 magic or something new and potentially more interesting.

The Asus Rampage III Gene and the Sabertooth are both X58
boards, but have implemented that chipset in very different ways. The Rampage III Gene is an mATX board, just like its predecessors and the Sabertooth is a member of the TUF series. The TUF series are designed to a variety of military specs, the capacitors, chokes, and MOSFETs have much higher resistance to moisture and temperature and that shows in the 5 year warranty offered, as opposed to the 3 years for the Rampage.
