I was at a party this past weekend where I bumped into an old friend of mine who works at RIM. After some small talk, the conversation went something like:

Me: "So have you used the new Pearl?"

While a lot of notebooks are being announced today featuring the latest Core 2 Duo mobile CPU (which we reviewed here), but the one that jumps out to me is the Dell XPS M1710 with the Core 2 Duo announced by Dell today.

Of course this shouldn't really be a surprise to many of you since we put a Core 2 Duo into a XPS M1710 almost 1 month ago and found that it worked nearly flawlessly.

HotHardware has found a way to get a dual-core whitebook.  It is from ASUS, based on Intel's 945 chipset, with a 15.4" screen and an integrated X1600 with 256Mb of memory.  Check out the full stats, and what HotHardware decided to put into it, after paying about $710 for the shell.

We continue with our experimenting with the new Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 CPU and this time we drop it into a Dell XPS M1710 laptop! The darn thing works! Granted the testing results are a bit mixed, the outlook is positive for a Core 2 Duo upgrade for existing M1710 owners.

The newest Lenovo ThinkPad, the T-60 contains an Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83GHz), 1GB of DDR2 667MHz SDRAM (2 DIMMs) and a 14.1" TFT with SXGA+ (1400x1050) resolution.  The Tech Report found that when it is put onto maximum battery power saving, you can surf for over 9 hours or 5.5 hours watching DVDs on a single charge.

Legit Reviews found a "whitebook" (a bare bones laptop, essentially no components other than the casing, screen and mobo), to build a gaming machine from.  The Clevo M575U and Sager 5760 can fit an impressive array of parts, and will function as a perfect desktop replacement.
