With 890GX motherboards we are seeing some support for 2000MHz but unfortunately not all can reach that height. For instance the ASUS M4A89GTD USB3 that OCC used as the base for testing the 2x2GB Mushkin Ridgeback 996902 PC3 16000 is limited to 1800MHz. In theory, by reducing the total spe

Dropping $750 on RAM might be beyond the budgets of some, but if you do video editing or run a server with lots of connections or virtual machines, 12GB sounds just about right. That is where Crucial's new 12GB DDR3 kit comes in, three 1333MHz 4GB DIMMs with timings of 9-9-9-25 @ 1T. You can tell right away these DIMMs are not for the overclocker, there is no fancy heatsink assembly and when you install them you will notice a complete lack of XMP support. On the other hand the lifetime warranty and support
and low voltages make this perfect for a production machine.

Kingston's new LoVo DIMMs are flexible and green

Kingston's HyperX PC3 1866MHz LoVo DIMMs seem a little strange at first glance and not just because of the green heatspreaders. It seems counterintuitive that a HyperX module, billed as Kingston's fastest product line should also be environmentally conscious. It does make sense when you realize that the DIMMs have more that one JEDEC spec. The first XMP profile runs the DIMMs at 1.2

Hercules and the RAM; Return of the Kingmax

Before you dismiss Kingmax as a non-player in the RAM industry, you have to realize that their downfall happened due to a slow adoption of DDR, in the days of SDRAM they were, well, King. They have returned, the Kingmax Hercules PC3-17600 represents the higher end of DDR3. Clocked out of the package at 2200MHz @ 10-10-10-30 2T the frequency is unarguably high even if the timings look relaxed. Of course, to most enthusiasts this screams for an overclock or at least a tightening of the timings and Tweaktown could not resist and

The Mushkin Ridgeback 998827 PC3 12800 kit is 3x2GB DDR3 DIMMs with a rather spiny look to them thanks to the integral heat spreaders. Natively they run at 8-8-8-24 but there is a bit of overhead left on these DIMMs, enough to take them over 2000MHz. OCC hit 2049MHz on their test system though the timings were reduced to 8-10-9-29 and th

It integrates its self with AMD's OverDrive utility allowing you to pick various profiles with the click of a mouse; if your motherboard offers support which not all do.

The Patriot Viper II Sector 5 2000MHz 4GB DDR3 kit sports timings of 8-8-8-24 and a price of $55 per gigabyte. If that seems a little steep to you it is because that is exactly what it is, however that is the penalty you pay for RAM that runs at 2GHz. The extra bandwidth did show up across the boards in the testing Legit Reviews did; though perhaps

G.Skill's new DDR-1600 ECO Kit 4 GB might not offer the fastest frequency on the market, what it does offer are low timings of 7-8-7-24 and a voltage of 1.35V to keep the heat down. That isn't even as far as it will go on those stock settings as techPowerUp!

At $225 for 4GB, the G.Skill Pi Series PC3-17600 is a little pricey and at DDR3-2200 speeds and 7-10-10-28 timings it is more than a little fast. Designed to work as dual channel RAM for a Core i7 860 or 870, and with support on a number of P55 boards, this is definitely a kit aimed at those looking for the top performance around. The kit comes with G.Skill's Turbulence Cooling Fan, a shroud type fan that attaches

The OCZ Black Edition DDR3-1600 memory kit is supposed to be designed specifically for AMD Black Edition CPUs. The colour certainly matches and the badge on the heatspreaders are a nice touch but it is really the performance that matters, which is what Benchmark Reviews set out to determine. 8-8-8-24 timings are relatively low, but to refer to RAM that uses the standard DDR3 voltage, 1.65V, as low voltage does seem to be a stretch. Super Talent is announcing the availability of two high density DDR3 1600MHz kits designed for Intel P55 and X58 systems. The 8GB kit (WP160UX8G9) consists of two 4GB sticks clocking in at 9-9-9-28, and the 12GB kit is identical but with three 4GB sticks.
These two kits should be available this week at resellers.
(Aside: This is painful for me as I just bought 4x2GB DDR3 sticks for my upcoming Lynnfield build. In retrospect I should have opted for 2x4GB instead.)

Hi-Tech Reviews takes a look at two alternatives to buying high end memory that comes equipped with large heatspreaders. Much of the time it is possible to purchase RAM with similar timings and speed for quite a bit less; or even more fun is to buy lower speed RAM and overclock it until it tries to melt. Picking up a third party cooler ensures that the meltdown won't happen quite as quickly, but the question remains as to whether the high end DIMMs that come equipped with heatspreaders can compete with third party memory coolers.

HEXUS is investigating the performance of an LGA1156 processor with different memory. They try two different DDR3-1600 kits, one with 4GB and one with 8GB along with a DDR3-2133 kit. In their testing they found very little difference in performance, perhaps because current DDR3 has pretty much saturated what a P55 board can handle. Take a look and see if you really want to spend those extra $$$ on a faster or bigger kit.

Do you have a friend or family member that thinks they are a tweaker, when in fact all they are is a serial hardware murderer? Someone who swears they've never touched the BIOS settings even when you are looking at a DIMM that was overvolted to the point it has almost soldered its self to the motherboard? You could put a password and a case lock on, but you could also try the Elixir 6GB 1600MHz kit. Elixir, or Nanya specifically, makes chips that conform to JEDEC standards. No matter what you do to these DIMMs, there is a maximum speed you will hit a ceiling at and not
