Aeneon is another of the companies trying to keep DDR2 competitive, having just introduced the XTune DDR2-1142 2GB kit.  With timings of 5-5-5-12 and that extra bit of speed, these modules can compete with some of the other top name brands.  Unfortunately, they are not for sale yet but you can see how they perform at Tweaktown.

Winchip's DDR2 667 may not be blazing fast compared to other DIMMs but the size is impressive.  16GB in four 4Gb DIMMs does stand out in the crowd though.  techPowerUp! couldn't get the DIMMs to overclock at all, but they did set up a RAM drive and used VMWare to set up a virtual Windows machine with good results.

Super Talent's new DDR2 Project X DIMMs showed themselves to be pretty powerful, and now Hardware Logic has had a chance to test the DDR3 version.  The 2Gb DDR3-2000 modules run 9-9-9-28 at 2T and hit 5-5-5-12-1T at 1333MHz with a bit of tweaking.  At $250 they are an investment, but if you want that kind of speed you need to pay for it somehow

Modding motherboards for faster memory

AnandTech has been doing some rather difficult testing of DDR3; by modding an ASUS P5E3 Premium X48-based motherboard.  They were specifically changing the clock signaling and frequency of the crystal oscillators.  This isn't quite as easy as upping the voltage and reducing the timings without changing MCH clock skew settings, this is some serious overclocking.  The results are very promising as well.

Patriot's new 2GB DDR3 kit is called the Viper Fin PC3-15000, and runs at 1866MHz with 8-8-8-24 timings.  Hardware Zone was rather impressed by the new cooling solution, it wasn't even warm to the touch at 2.5V!  A little tweaking and by relaxing the timings just a little, to 9-9-9-28 and bumping the voltage up to 1.9V, they hit 2000MHz.

DDR2 is getting some rather oddly clocked modules as it matures, like Aeneon's newest XTune 2GB kit which is clocked at 1142MHz.  It is built to DDR2-800 CL5 specs, but is able to go faster if your board can handle it.  Big Bruin's could handle those speeds and more, the kit toped out at 1242MHz with the default 5-5-5-15 timings.

DDR2 is still running strong

Thanks to ever increasing clock rates, and lower latencies than DDR3; DDR2 is still going strong.  One of your newest choices is the Kingston HyperX 2GB PC2-9200 kit a pair of 1Gb DIMMs.  The default clock speed of 1150MHz is strange, but hitting 1200MHz is awfully easy, as you can see at Big Bruin.

8Gb kits are uncommon, but you can find kits for sale like the OCZ Quad 2Gb that Madshrimps tested.  They start out by looking at the rumours surrounding the usage of 8Gbs of RAM in a system, and then dispel them.  They felt the only sticking point was the price, but at $200, 2Gb of DDR3 will cost almost as much.
