Apparently NVIDIA and VIA are in talks to merge, with the larger NVIDIA obviously doing the buying and the aging, struggling VIA looking to sell. We recently talked with VIA about their upcoming processor line and can't help but think that NVIDIA still desperately wants to get into the general purpose processor world to have a snowball's chance of competing with Intel in the long run.

No no, this time we MEAN it. For reallys. The X48 chipset is coming in mid-March, according to Intel according to Digitimes.
Intel has informed motherboard makers that it will
definitely launch its X48 chipset in mid March, two months later than
its original launch date, according to industry sources. The X48
chipset was originally slated for launch in January, but Intel pushed
it back as inventory of X38 had yet to be cleared, the sources said.

AMD to push the RS780 chipset into China

Even though we more or less KNEW this was coming, it is sad to see the official end of an era over at VIA. According to this Digitimes report, the chipset division, responsible for such masterpieces as the KT266A and KT133A, is being bundled in with the CPU division.

NVIDIA MCP72 chipset delayed

NVIDIA is getting all the headlines this morning, though maybe they don't want to. Digitimes is reporting that the MCP72 chipset, otherwise known as the nForce 700 series for AMD platforms, is being delayed until the first of next year. Being as it is now December 28th, this makes sense, no? Still bad news is bad news.
X48 chipset possibly delayed

This is interesting news considering that we had at least one motherboard partner attempt to send us an X48-chipset motherboard this month. I say "attempt" because the board didn't show up because "sales took it back" or something. Perhaps then that is indicative of this delay on the chipset? Perhaps Intel didn't want to piss off the motherboard vendors that bought tons of X38 product quite yet??

It looks like Intel is already planning their push into DDR3 memory technologies with a set of chipsets for late 2007.
X38 is the enthusiast top notch chipset scheduled for a Q3 2007 introduction. This is intended to replace the 975X chipset. It served us well but it lived too long. It cannot support DDR 2 memory at 1066, and we see that as a problem for enthusiasts. It supports PCIe 2.0, 2x16 PCIe graphic slots, DDR 3 memory at 1333 and a Quad core support.
