While we have seen ASUS' Maximus V Formula before and it still sports three PCIe 3.0 16x ports, up to 32GB of DDR3, six SATA 6G ports, 8 USB 2.0 ports, six USB 3.0 ports, wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth and mSATA with the mPCIe combo card. The new part to this version of the motherboard is the ThunderFX external USB audio DAC, which uses the C-Media 6631 audio processor and [H]ard|OCP found it superior to the onboard SupremeFX solution in every way. Read on to see why.

I wonder why [H]ard|OCP is just getting around to this review? The MVF w/ThunderFX has been around since 06/2012. Is there something unique about this, or is this just a late-coverage review? This will be a great unit for
This will be a great unit for someone who doesn’t really know how to piece together their own mid-fi audio gear.
Or thinks Beats Audio is HiFi 🙂
Knowing Asus RoG gear it should be pretty damn good for entry level gear.
You really don’t have a clue
You really don’t have a clue about ASUS audio, do you?
Check out the Xonar Essence One and come back.
ASUS knows how to make good shit. Most their high end audio equipment is filled with quality Japanese Nichicon Fine-Gold or Muse-ES bi-polarized audio caps, Burr-Brown, Cirrus-Logic ADC/DAC’s and all that jazz.
If you need a ready-made sound card that also plays well with GAMES, this thing is great.
If not, then surely Firewire is the way to go.
