iBuyPower, the maker of high-end gaming desktops and notebooks, will be announcing the launch of a new touch-screen gaming notebook - the Battalion Touch CZ-10. Not much is known about this product at the moment except that it features a 15.4" touch sensitive screen, perfect for UbiSoft's R.U.S.E.

Lenovo Unveils New ThinkPad Edge and Ultraportable X100e

Lenovo has announced new additions to their ThinkPad line of mobile PCs. Notable is the new ThinkPad Edge notebook which is a thin profile product that comes in a choice of two colours - Black and Heat Wave Red.

I'll pause here to let that sink in. This is the first time in history that a ThinkPad can be had in a colour other than black.

New Intel Arrandale Mobile CPU Released and Reviewed

Not the ones to ignore the hot mobile market, Intel today is releasing new Core i3, i5, and i7 mobile CPUs based on the Arrandale core. What makes these new CPUs significantly different from the previous generation Core2 or even the existing i7 mobile CPU based on Clarksfield (not to be confused with the Clarkdale desktop CPU) is the inclusion of Intel's new HD Graphics with dynamic frequency clocking that adjusts the CPU and GPU frequencies up and down depending on your current task.

Lenovo’s decision to use the ThinkPad Edge to go more mainstream with the brand was a gamble, but apparently it’s paid off.  Edge seems to be doing so well, in fact, that Lenovo is launching four new Edge laptops at CES.

An interesting story at Arstechnica is talking about that thing that always seems to make the news: the Apple tablet.  Sure, no one has actually seen it and stories about it are as common as crime in New York, but hey, why not bring it up again, right?

ASRock releases a new ION+Atom mini-ITX motherboard

Again, despite all the noise around the updated Atom processors and platforms, ASRock has announced a new motherboard using the previous (current) generation of Atom processor and the NVIDIA ION platform.  The ASRock A330ION combines a solid mix of great features for advanced users in an incredibly small package.

Though most of our discussion about notebooks recently has been centering around the freshly announced Intel Pine Trail platform and the Atom processors, it looks like ASUS is getting at least one new sweet looking gaming notebook ready to show off as well.  The ASUS X77 specs we are seeing rumored are pretty impressive:

Asus Preparing Eee Tablet with Tegra

While NVIDIA may be facing some issues with their Fermi GPU and getting ION (or even ION 2) into your netbook, their Tegra line continues to gain wins in portable mobile devices. The latest rumour is an Asus Eee tablet to be announced in March 2010 that will use some form of Tegra chip (likely a Tegra 2, but who knows). The details are scant, and we don't have any official word from Asus about their plans.

Every once in a long while us nerds get some kind of redemption with the mainstream markets.  Tonight was supposed to be one of those nights.  After seeing about 500 tweets from NVIDIA employees about a "mystery Tegra device" being shown on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, I decided I would pay attention and see what was up.

Well, the device we saw was the NVIDIA Tegra tablet that was making the rounds last month:

I have to say, just looking at this device, without even known the specs, makes me want one.  The Notion Ink smartpad is a 10-in tablet computer that utilizes the NVIDIA Tegra chip along with a bunch of other specs to create what everyone drooling about the rumored Apple tablet could want.

NVIDIA's ION 2 chipset continues to gain steam, CES 2010

While the current NVIDIA ION chipset has been a well received product in the media and with very select few enthusiasts thanks to its higher performing graphics and ability to accelerate decoding of both HD/Blu-ray and Flash video, it would be safe to say that the chipset has been less successful in the mass market than NVIDIA would have liked.  Until very recently, there were only a handful of netbooks/notebooks/nettops released with the ION chipset, the most notable of which was the HP Mini 311 which we are currently testing in house.  This winter we will see a new series from ASUS

Thieves are always looking for an easy target, but the following two stories show that law-enforcement's efforts in prevention and tracking stolen laptops is getting equally crafty.

In the UK, a woman has been sentenced to jail for stealing a laptop thanks to evidence provided by a keylogger that was loaded and running while the thief was using the stolen goods. This in itself isn't newsworthy since we've heard about keyloggers catching thieves before.

Yes, the Apple tablet doesn't really exist yet, but can't we all just assume that it will in the not too distant future?  Even if that "distant" is like 2011?  And even though a non-item has been making the world of tablets exciting again, at least there is something new cooking up.  The JooJoo tablet (ugh) seems to be making a big splash after ripping of the TechCrunch guys and we at PC Perspective are all for innovative new mobile designs.

Sugar Labs, the makers of the Sugar OS for the OLPC project, has released their OS bootable from a USB drive - or "Sugar on a Stick". The real potential of this is the ability to load a fool-proof OS onto a system without having to create an alternative boot partition.
