We’ll be meeting with VIA while at CES next month, and the UMPC definitely seems to be where VIA is heading

VIA Technologies is restructuring its business and taking aim at the Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPCs) market, with the company expecting solid growth in the segment in 2007, according to VIA Technologies president and CEO, Wen-chi Chen.

Chen also indicated that 2008 and 2009 will be a turning point for VIA in the UMPC market. The company’s UMPC business will see explosive growth during 2008 and 2009, said Chen.

VIA showcased two UMPCs, which use VIA’s C7-M 1GHz processor at a press event in Taiwan today and Chen said there will be more VIA-based UMPCs available in the market next year. The global market for handsets and smart phones will reach 130 million units next year, Chen estimated.
