It is hard to place all of the blame on Alienware or on Dell who bought them, but the high powered gaming laptop seems to be going extinct very quickly.  Even with the high end components in the Area-51 m15x, it can’t keep up with a desktop system of less than half the price.  Trying to display 1920×1200 on a 15.4″ screen is a bad idea, there is no way to keep the components reasonably cool, and don’t even think of using the battery, it will be flat in half an hour.  ThinkComputers recently reviewed model was a bit less expensive, though still prohibitive.  The model that TechSpot played with is just nonsensical.

“For years Alienware has been producing machines that cater to gamers and enthusiasts desires, coupling some of the industry’s most radical designs with top of the line PC hardware. So when Alienware introduced the Area-51 m15x we were obviously keen to check it out.

Our review sample came configured with the new Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 “Penryn XE” mobile processor and a GeForce 8800M GTX (512MB) graphics card. In short, this is the combination of the fastest possible mobile CPU and the fastest mobile GPU out there. Of course, this won’t come cheap as the retail value of our review sample was $4770.”
