Now that [H]ard|OCP has had more time to spend with the new R9 390X they have managed to find the overclocks that they are most comfortable running on the card they used to test. They used MSI Afterburner 4.1.1 and first overclocked the card without changing voltages at all, which netted them 1150MHz core and 6.6GHz effective on the RAM. From there they started to raise to Core Voltage, eventually settling on +50 as settings higher than that resulted in lower maximum observed voltages due to the TDP being reached and the card throttling back. With that voltage setting they could get the card to run at 1180MHz, with the memory speed remaining at 6.6GHz as it is not effected by the core voltage settings, with the fan speed set 80% they saw a consistent 67C GPU temperature. How much impact did that have on performance and could it push the card's performance beyond an overclocked GTX 980? Read the full review to find out in detail.
"We take the new MSI Radeon R9 390X GAMING 8G video card and overclock it to it fullest and compare it with an overclocked GeForce GTX 980 at 1440p and 4K in today's latest games. Find out how much overclocking the R9 390X improves performance, and which video card is best performing. Can R9 390X overclock better than R9 290X?"

not bad,still better Value
not bad, still better Value than Nvidia cards.
but cooling down this Hawaii chip is a Big Deal.
Better paying a bit more and
Better paying a bit more and get the winner card and over clock to 1500+ easy and have better driver support.
Yet still no pcper 380x
Yet still no pcper 380x review? For a site that prides itself on gfx reviews this is a pretty poor effort.
*meant to say 390x

since a 390x is nothing more
since a 390x is nothing more then an overclocked rebranded 290x you could just look at that and add about 10% to results. that is about what it will give you. AMD has tried to claim 390x is a new chip but its straight up rebranded 290x, sad AMD holds firm to that even when chip says hawaii and has a release date of oct 2013.
Wow that I didn’t know. So
Wow that I didn’t know. So ont he chip itself it says Hawaii with release dat oct 2013?
What about the power efficiency efforts they made to this chip for it to run a bit cooler and less power hungry? As seen it can overclock just a small margin better than the 290x ones.

don’t listen it’s not a
don’t listen it’s not a re’branding a re’engineering at worst
Some of the power saving
Some of the power saving features of Carizzo have been carried over to the 300 series, so you can’t claim it to be a straight rebrand, no matter how much you want to.
It’s true that looks nothing like an architecture upgrade, but your claim in that form is a simple misinformation.
It’s a re’engineering not a
It’s a re’engineering not a re’branding as you say, it has lots more new features than the 290x as well
I appreciate that, but if
I appreciate that, but if “its straight up rebranded 290x” then performance would be identical. Regardless, the card warrants a review from PCPer as a matter of urgency and I’m sure Ryan is disappointed with himself for not having done it yet. I appreciate a baby has dropped but the review must come first.
Have you considered the case
Have you considered the case these cards are tested in?
The new GPU’s are quite dependent on their built in thermal throttling, making the case airflow more important.
Perhaps a comparison of water-cooled 390x and 980 cards would be interesting? Taking the case out of the equation.
Perhaps the same AIO solution for both cards?
I mean Hardocp checked to
I mean Hardocp checked to make sure they didn’t throttle and the 390x was at 67c which is a great temp.
I love my Sapphire Vapor-X R9
I love my Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290 or the 290’s in general because of the price/performance ratio’s, but the 390x is just rough, and that power comsumption overclocked yikes.
I can OC my 290 to 1175mhz but I noticed something hardocp did; overclock the memory. I have never noticed a performance increase from doing this. Add’s heat and power for no performance.
It’s not rough mate i have a
It’s not rough mate i have a brand spanking new msi 390x and it runs all games at 4k on highish settings and 2k maxed out and is also as smooth as butter even when i limit the witcher 3 to 30 fps (just for an experiment it’s still silky smooth, no need to co’s get 40 – 60 fps in ultra 2k) in no way is it rough your just peeved that your 290 with it’s insane heat 94c has been outdone 🙂
So, what did they get their
So, what did they get their memory up too? In MHz?
I have this card and I was
I have this card and I was able to get my memory up to 1750MHz with +75mv aux voltage. This puts it at 7000MHz (effective) and max theoretical bandwidth with a 512bit bus at 448GB/S
really? see i’d be too scared
really? see i’d be too scared to push mine that far and am unsure about OC’ing it anyway £370 is a lot of money for me damn well worth it though 🙂 makes next gen consoles look like commodore 64’s lol
