XFX has been a solid nVIDA partner, but hasn’t work with AMD’s graphics division until now, and they chose to enter at the high end with their HD 4870 1GB XXX card.  Overclocked to 775MHz core and 3.8GHz GDDR5 it does have an advantage over the vanilla card, but not as much as the XXX would imply.  It’s competitor is MSI’s N260GTX OC3, with a 655MHz and 2.1GHz GDDR3, which managed to keep up very well, and at a lower purchase price.  [H]ard|OCP couldn’t let the conservative factory overclock on these cards stand untested, see how well the overclocking experience went in their article.

“We evaluate our first AMD GPU video card from XFX, the Radeon HD 4870 1GB XXX. We compare to MSI’s new custom N260GTX OC3. Both are tested against an ATI Radeon HD 4890 to see which comes out on top in F.E.A.R. 2, GTA IV, Fallout 3, FarCry 2, and Crysis Warhead. In-depth overclock testing too.”
