AMD Radeon R9 290X shows up for $549 on Newegg. Is the worst behind us?

Yes, I know it is only one card.  And yes I know that this could sell out in the next 10 minutes and be nothing, but I was so interested, excited and curious about this that I wanted to put together a news post.  I just found a Radeon R9 290X card selling for $549 on Newegg.com.  That is the normal, regular, non-inflated, expected retail price.

WAT.

You can get a Powercolor AXR9 290X with 4GB of memory for $549 right now, likely only if you hurry.  That same GPU on Amazon.com will cost you $676.  This same card at Newegg.com has been as high as $699:

Again - this is only one card on one site, but the implications are positive.  This is also a reference design card, rather than one of the superior offerings with a custom cooler.  After that single card, the next lowest price is $629, followed by a couple at $649 and then more at $699.  We are still waiting to hear from AMD on the issue, what its response is and if it can actually even do anything to fix it.  It seems plausible, but maybe not likely, that the draw of coin mining is reached a peak (and who can blame them) and the pricing of AMD GPUs could stabilize.  Maybe.  It's classified.

But for now, if you want an R9 290X, Newegg.com has at least one option that makes sense.

Now if only it wasn't the Powercolor model. If that were a Sapphire or Asus card it would already be on it's way to my house.

Well, it's a reference model so in reality, they are all the same.

What's wrong with powercolor? I've had nothing but good cards from them and here in Australia they are the cheapest out of all the brands.

I have a ati5850 from them and still going strong. So have a few of my mates.

Just had to RMA a sapphire reference model 290x. Ran at 95C in a veritable windtunnel of a case and died in 2 days. Fortunately the pricing trend is continuing and even custom cooler 290X are getting back to reasonable prices.

"This same card at Newegg.com has been as high as $699:"

Correction, $899.99

read the reviews over there at newegg .
many are one star .
card crapped out after mining a bit .

By many you mean 3? LOL.

One of the reviews isn't even for that card.

Well, ATM most altcoin exchanges are getting Goxxed as well, putting trades into hold, giving new miners second thoughts, etc. etc.

Might as well stock in a couple of 290X's now and sell for 'cheaper' when the prices go up again. (:

It's back up to $599 already. Hopefully it's the start of a trend though.

As ryan said its reference card, so less you drop about extra $ on it to put better cooler on it, if kinda an iffy deal cause we have seen how much AMD 290 cards can vary from card to card with that cooler on it.

I will continue to buy Nvidia cards as long as the price are unreasonable.

If this shit wasn't going on we could have already see the appropriate price drop on the GTX 780 Ti like we should have. That thing going for $649 or $699 is a rip off the same way it was when the GTX 780 was going for the same price. Both could easily drop to $399 and $499 and be hugely profitable, but they wont do that and this is power for the core.

Need partner boards at correct pricing. Please! I'm one week away from a 290X or god forbid a 780Ti. Save me AMD.

March 4, 2014 | 06:43 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

Yes, I would never buy these AMD reference cards .

Only way would be with beefy dual fan cooler , IMO AMD just pushed these chips past there design point .

March 4, 2014 | 08:56 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

ppl who go high end graphics dont really care if reference or not, they just watercool it.
in france we dont have prices like these, probably because ppl arn't mining as much as in the US.
i have a cruch on the XfX R9 290X Double D, but no retailer is selling it, AMD could make alot more money with better distribution, and hopefully for you guys this Nvidia maxwell arch will take some of the miners away from AMD graphics.
at least for low end, because if nvidia didnt introduce high end first, it's probably that the TDP wont be as impressive as the 750Ti.

March 4, 2014 | 08:57 PM - Posted by PapaDragon

Well , It hasnt sold out yet..meaning the people who were really going to buy it for gaming probably bought an Nvidia card, and a small percentage bought the non reference one for a premium.

You gotta luv that "limit 6 per customer" tag.

March 5, 2014 | 08:57 AM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

With miners STILL buying up cards by the dozen, the 6 limit actually means something...

March 5, 2014 | 12:44 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

its already out of stock
this is not news, this is why all cards are higher then they should be, update your story, this is false hope.

2nd try on posting, card already sold out, if this is spam, delete it, don't see my first comment?

I bought a 560 Ti in 2011 for $150 on Amazon *New*....so I wouldn't get my hopes up on this
