The ground breaking for Fab 2 is scheduled for next month and once it is completed in 2011 it will be the lead on 28nm process and smaller.  This leaves Fab 1 to handle current 45nm and 32nm process based chips, with it’s main focus being on ramping up production.  If Fab 1 can get a solid amount of production coming out to finance their R&D, then Tom Sonderman’s plan to beat Intel into sub 45nm processes may become reality. You can see some of the planned timetable at DigiTimes.

“Globalfoundries is scheduled to break ground for its new facility (Fab 2) at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in New York in July, according to Tom Sonderman, the foundry’s vice president of manufacturing systems and technology, speaking at a press event during Computex 2009. The spin-off of AMD’s manufacturing division has achieved mature yields for 45nm, and expects to ramp 28nm at Fab 2, Sonderman revealed.”
