The Rebel scum known as the LEDE Project have broken away from the OpenWRT project in an unannounced move meant to increase transparency. Jokes aside, The Register named seven of the developers who are part of this forking, a not uncommon practice in open source projects. LEDE will try to bring in fresh enthusiasm to a Linux project which has been losing the interest of programmers, perhaps due to the lack of transparency that they cite or possibly just due to waning interest in a long running project. Pop on over to their page to see their mission statement, rules and processes if you are interested in how they compare to OpenWRT.
"The LEDE Project – Linux Embedded Development Environment – describes itself as a breakaway project that wants to overcome what it sees as faults in OpenWRT."

Nice thing about any open
Nice thing about any open source project(GPL license, some other lincenses) is if you don’t like the management structure of things on the project just Fork IT, and go make some project of you own! Just look and Devuan Linux and its “Fork IT” to the systemd/Debian based tree. Hopefully there will be some Devuan Mint/other Mint like downstream action from the Devuan fork. Meanwhile systemd is eating more than its share of functionality in systemd’s NON Unix KISS philosophy of keeping things small and managable! It’s great for open source to have that Fork_ability! To many dependencies on one monolithic block of code is not a good thing.
The power of open source is
The power of open source is the power of god: no one believe in the same…
No not the power of DOG, just
No not the power of DOG, just the freedom to roll some of your own distro/project should the lead developers sellout to the monolothic monster! It lets some take to the highway Fork while their former distro/project takes that my way(Lemming) approach and leaps off of that monolithic granite rock! Fork_You Buddy, I’m off to do my own, while you so eagerly make like Qbert and take the vertical path onto the jagged rocks below all the while accelerating at 9.8 m/s**2 on your merry way to SPLAT!
Wasting so much time in so
Wasting so much time in so many forks will makes you eat more iron than recommanded by nutritionists…
The freedom in open source looks like more free doom softwares promoting guru’s ego rather than offering relevant services to end users.
Could you tell me how many Linux distributions are on the market nowadays? What is the main reason for forking the main distributions? A relative beautiful default wallpaper? An efficient system architecture? A better ego promotion? Something else?
The internet/cloud/HPC market
The internet/cloud/HPC market runs on the Linux Kernel based server distros. The enterprises in that market sure as hell do not want the sponges in Redmond soaking up all of their profits! The Steam OS/Linux gaming market needs some alternative to M$’s UWP lock-in and wedding of the windows 10 OS/UWP CLOSED ecosystem that will take its 30% off of the top of that market’s profits.
And I will add to that that M$ is only the supplier of the OS to the third party PC/laptop OEM market, and some end users value their privacy and do not want M$, Google, or any others sticking their noses where they do not belong. Nobody that uses M$’s OSs really likes, or ever liked M$ in the first place, it was just that M$’s OS products, windows 7 and below, kept out of users business for the most part and did not force these users into any closed OS/App store and telemetry gathering monetization schemes like 8, and now windows 10 does. Windows 10 especially with its forced updates and EULA that gives M$ the rights like the rights that a lord of the land had over the serfs bound to that land. People want to have control over their PC/Laptop hardware and OS/Software ecosystem.
So it’s not just the graybeards that want open sourced OS/Application ecosystems, it’s the enterprises that want a standardized open source software OS/Ecosystem that they all can support and not have to suffer any single vendor lock-in to any hardware/software/closed OS ecosystem. So everybody chips in to have the source code open sourced and usable/supported by all.
In the GPL open source world software(Open Source) is the coin of the realm, with anyone able to contribute and use the software of others and add their software part to roll their own OS/software ecosystem. The only legal tender is source code and in the GPL world the payment method is:
that if you use the code contributed by others and add your own code to the code base then you must share that source code part that you made from your developed code(Tender it) to the overall source code base as payment using the others open source code in your open source project.
There are other more restrictive licenses for “Open Sourced” code, but the GPL appears to have the widest acceptance. But the ability to Fork things freely is what makes open source so democratic and fair to all parties. If you don’t want to share your code then open source is not for you, and you should have no rights to use others GPL code, but don’t knock others that do so!

Open source or more precisly
Open source or more precisly free software projects aren’t democratic since the development is ruled by self-called “benevolent dictators”.
These gurus uses free softwares to promote their career like Justin Bieber uses so-called “social networks” to promote his popularity.
For example, Lennart Poettering has more in common with Justin Bieber than with Dennis Ritchie…
“benevolent dictators” can be
“benevolent dictators” can be told to F-off while those others Fork-Off the open-source code and start their own projects using the very open source code base with modifications(strip out systemd and any systemd dependencies) to achieve the Forked projects makers’ goals!
It’s that freedom to fork the open source code that is the most democratizing force against any benevolent dictators’ actions that may afflict any open source project’s management structure and code base with any open source software bastardizations(monolithic software/API/OS/start-up code philosophy)! It gives to the many that ability to take to the highway and tell the my way(benevolent dictators) to smell you later! Waddle in you own stinky quagmire!
Where is the democracy when a
Where is the democracy when a parent distribution (of many others) like Debian evolves like any corrupted administration by co-opting developers in a closed circle of followers? Administration should serve administrated not take their life in hostage. What they call “meritocracy” is rather a wrong discrimination based on arbitrary choices. Guru’s ego are killing free softwares like old communists revert their coat to became “modern” capitalists.
If all Linux distributions are owned by Red Hat gurus, I see no interest in using any open source TM Linux system. When then death of Linux systems will come, I would probably use a closed system that serve to users rather than enslave users in their popularity cult.
Debian(Linux Kernel based)
Debian(Linux Kernel based) has been forked by the Devuan(without systemd) developers. So Devuan and some other Linux kernel based distros do offer Linux kernel based OS distros without systemd/systemd dependencies! There is even a FreeBSD based Debian_GNU/kFreeBSD Debian that uses the FreeBSD kernel. (1)
So there are other open source kernel options also, in which to build an OS distro on top of!
Debian is a major Linux kernel based branch for the downstream Debian based/derived distros, but they are free to choose Devuan also to build their downstream distros on top of, it’s their choice!
Red Hat does not own the Linux Kernel or the software developed and licensed under the GPL, that is open source! Red Hat only makes money providing services to its customer base, but not for any of the OS/software under the GPL licenses! Red Hat is the main sponsor of the systemd “Startup” software that is used by many other debian based distros, but the forking has begun and there will be a systemd alternative for the Linux Kernel. BSD based kernel derived distros will defnitely be systemd free, but that’s a different kernel with which to buid an OS on!

Devuan have no future since
Devuan have no future since it depends on Debian main tree. Once more, Debian is a highly GNOME integrated distribution that makes users hostage of the GNOME desktop environment and developers.
You’re portrait of Red Hat is incomplete. A bunch of gurus such as Lennart Poettering are employed by Red Hat to capture the Linux market by pushing their technology. Red Hat made agreements with Microsoft and I won’t be surprise if one day Microsoft buy Red Hat to share with the open community their patented open technologies…
Then go FreeBSD! Devuan will
Then go FreeBSD! Devuan will have a future for some who will not want systemd, and the Linux kernel based market is not the only open source OS market out there! There will be other Linux Kernel options, BSD options, etc. And it’s not all about capturing markets with one open source option it’s ABOUT having the option to go your own direction!
Lennart Poettering and GURU in the same sentence, really! Ask Linus about that! Fork-YOU! You are well done with you continued bloviating and digressing! M$ is always trying its three Es policies, so what is new under the SUN! Red Hat is not the only game in town, and the Linux kernel is not the only open source Kernel also! And That Linux kernel itself can also be Forked because the source code is there and available.
Here go read! There is a nice graphic/timeline up to about 2013, it’s really in need of some updating to track the systemd usage, but it’s still intresting nonetheless!

Reading your raging comments could makes me love Microsoft softwares… I’m joking of course! :o)

Ah another GIT. M$ sucks the big red one! Your factory jobs are now in China soon to be moved to Vietnam, and other places where you are not at! With ROBOTS your jobs will never return, but they will be located nearer to where the products are consumed. The costs of shipping will surpass the costs of labor so those big factories will be moved closer to home, but you meat-sacks will not be working there!
It’s the farm for you, get to growing you M$ TOOL! OSs will become open source like many other things, but hicks must move to the sticks for their source of employment! STAY OUT of the urban areas with your hick ways! The the anti-hick ROBOTS will be there to keep the cities and towns hick free! M$ will be relegated to the dust bin of history and unable to leach off of enterprises or consumers! Developers, Developers, Developers will be doing the developing for the open source vital infrastructure OS/API/software not owned by any one interest!
The white collar workers’ jobs are now being outsourced, like the blue collar workers’ jobs have been for a long time! There is no sympathy all around, so it’s the farm for those without the marketable skill sets to survive in the cities and towns. Don’t get mad get to plowing those fields! Ah the post-industrial leads to the post turnip cart bozos taking those carts back out of town once again with the cities’ crime rates going back down!
