This does not apply to our North American readers, although it is good for them to know. To our European fans: Samsung has pulled out of the laptop market, for devices running either Windows or ChromeOS, in your region. The company is not commenting on how many jobs will be lost as a result of this decision. Samsung is not halting operations in any other region and this decision "is not necessarily reflective of conditions in other markets".
Parallels are drawn with Sony and its VAIO division, but this is significantly different. Sony sold its PC business to Japanese Industrial Partners who, in July, relaunched the brand in Japan. Samsung has not sold any division although there is rumors of upcoming restructuring. While Samsung will retain their brand and continue to develop products for the other regions, pulling away is always concerning for customers. It really could be a geographic anomaly, like Xbox was in Japan, or it could be a warning tremor. We simply do not know.
That’s a win win for the EU,
That’s a win win for the EU, as Samsung’s system software in terrible on windows laptops, and there will be others to supply laptops to the EU market, hopefully with better OEM system software. Toshiba also has problems with regards to its OEM system software. I really wish M$ would enforce a standard set of functions for controlling the Wifi, and other wireless antennas/controllers across its OS, and not allow laptop/PC OEMs system software to hook into the functionality, or allow users to disable/override an OEM’s dysfunctional software, and us the OS instead, it is so annoying to use my Samsung series 3 laptop, and have it continually re-enable the wifi and then auto connect to the nearest Wifi hot spot, before I have a chance to stop it, its happens too quickly as soon I login, Samsung’s control software definitely has a mind of its own. My Toshiba satellite laptop’s system Wifi/other control software just gradually ceased to function properly over the years, with very little updates, and Toshiba telling its users to re-install the software to fix the problem, as the only solution, instead of fixing the issues, with an update, just assured Toshiba of no more repeat business from me, and that includes other Toshiba made products as well, the same goes for Samsung.
Samsung just stop using your
Samsung just stop using your fugly shiny plastic, noone in Europe likes that shit, we like sleek looking devices, not something that belongs in a box with barbie dolls.
Yeah, speak for
Yeah, speak for yourself.
People who aren’t mad, judge computers based on their performance and value/price, not aesthetics and Samsung’s chromebooks have great value/price for a student looking for a GNU/Linux machine with good battery life.
There are other chromebooks,
There are other chromebooks, for the GNU Linux users, Samsung needs to be taken down a peg, Toshiba Too! So stop trying to spin Samsung in a positive way, Their System Software is the pits. Its High Time, that along with the build quality of the hardware, the build quality of the OEM,s system management software be rated, and Samsung, as well as other OEM system software rates a big fat F. And the Linux users, could use Netbook/chromebook types of systems that come with a Full Linux distro factory installed, the same goes for tablets, why should their even be the need for a development mode to run full Linux, let the Android runtime execute as a desktop application under a full Linux distro!
Good. Take your segmented,
Good. Take your segmented, overpriced trash elsewhere…
like Merica, i hear people there buy the same iphone five times.
