Details and photographs of the GeForce GTX 980 are leaking on various forums and websites. Based on the Maxwell architecture, it is supposed to be faster and more efficient than Kepler while being manufactured on an identical, 28nm fab process. While we were uncertain before, it now looks like the GTX 980 will be its formal name, as seen in leaked photographs, below.

As expected, the cooler is a continuation of NVIDIA's reference cooler, as seen on recent high-end graphics cards (such as the GeForce Titan). Again, this is not a surprise. The interesting part is that it is rated for about 250W whereas Maxwell is rumored to draw 180W. While the reference card has two six-pin PCIe power connectors, I am curious to see if the excess cooling will lead to interesting overclocks. That is not even mentioning what the AIB partners can do.

Beyond its over-engineering for Maxwell's TDP, it also includes a back plate.

Its display connectors have been hotly anticipated. As you can see above, the GTX 980 has five outputs: three DisplayPort, one HDMI, and one DVI. Which version of HDMI? Which version of DisplayPort? No clue at the moment. There has been some speculation regarding HDMI 2.0, and the DisplayPort 1.3 standard was just released to the public today, but I would be pleasantly surprised if even one of these made it in.

It’ll be $500, maybe $450 if they want a price war. That price point puts it right below the 290x as a value proposition with likely similar performance.
The most interesting information about this card will be maxwell overclocking. If this thing overclocks like a 750ti which can break 1.4ghz boost clock on air, then it will surpass 780ti easily. I expect custom OC cards to break 1.4ghz easily and get really close to 1.5ghz.
Its 600 $ XD

Its 600 $ XD
exactly as fast an exactly as expensive as a 780ti… what a waste of time for everyone, wow
fuck nvidia and amd, im sick of marginal price/performace upgrades… not giving my money to anyone unless i get a single gpu card thats as fast as a 295×2
Remember, with the overall
Remember, with the overall popularity of PCs since the 80s, and the increasing costs of continued fab process shrinks, expect the big tech companies to be more in the technology milking business, than in the rapid hardware technological advancements business. A 3rd player in the desktop GPU market, would put more pressure on the others to advance the pace of improvements! I am hoping the PowerVR(Imagination tech.) product line, could be scaled up to a desktop SKU, especially the PowerVR wizard, with the hardware ray tracing circuitry. Having the ability to do massively parallel Ray Interaction calculations on a discrete GPU, would pretty much obviate the need for uber-expensive server CPUs on graphics workstations. The same can be said for dedicated ray tracing hardware and gaming, as this would greatly improve the realism of games/game lighting, as well as reduce the massive data flow between CPU and GPU, that is a great limiting factor in game performance, having the ray interactions done on GPU hardware, will also reduce the need for expensive multicore CPUs for gaming, as any ray tracing that would need to be done in software on the CPU, would be done in hardware on the GPU.
Once you overclock Maxwell
Once you overclock Maxwell power efficiency goes out the window and remember the 750 ti didn’t show much real world improvement once it was OC. You get an average of 3 fps higher, 4 fps if your lucky and the card doesnt throttle as much.
For $30 dollars more you could have bought the next GPU from Nvidia or AMD that performed far better.
why didn’t they just get rid
why didn’t they just get rid of all dvi connectors and go straight hdmi/display port

i do agree dvi ports on
i do agree dvi ports on graphics cards need to go. i would love to have the grpahics card take up a single sloy (when water cooled) but you cant because of the damn backplate.
its an easy fix too. just throw in a hdmi to dvi adapter. problem solved
Really cool that they keep
