Over at The Register is a look at a completely different conference involving HP's CTO and his companies upcoming projects. The most interesting by far is the news about memristors, the new type of memory which uses changes in local resistance to store data at a much faster pace than current technology, which has become viable as of this year and is expected to hit the market by 2016 with the technology hitting its stride by 2018. He also sees the current software-defined fad as being exactly that, a fad, and that advances in the performance and power usage of technology will quickly eclipse it as a viable solution, also pointing out the incredibly low adoption rate amongst enterprise. The Cloud kinda scares me a little. I just cant help but thinking of a huge school of minnows being hunted or whatever. I dont think they’re “survival” strategy involves becoming ONE GIANT organism. Which is what OUR DATA (and by virtue, OURSELVES) become when its ALL in Google Drive or iCloud. Na.. That would make it easier for the predators (hacks) to get they’re meal (OUR data…. ie US).
Personal NAS seems more and more like the way to go… If you HAVE to have CONSTANT access to your data of course. Big companies have they’re hands tied a little bit…but definitely not the rest of us.

All of the Metal(disks, networking gear, CPUs, and such) is covered in a thick layer of software abstraction, and blackstrap molasses! Things are going to get very sticky if the software defined goes tits-up, and everything disappears down the bit bucket. Better have some good old fashioned copies of all those software Objects/containers, widgets, and doodads, copied sequentially to good old fashioned tape, just in case those software defined disk drives are of no assistance.

Quick and dirty explanation, not entirely accurate but …
Software defined means you pay an external company to provide you with the hosting/services you need, you have no clue what hardware it is running on nor what the support is nor the geography. The exact opposite of having servers which host your data, knowledge of the location and IT staff that actually care if it is running or not.

I think the speaker is referring to the fact that Hardware comes first. Just fact. Hardware THEN software.
There has been a growing “complacency”, if you will, with our hardware past few years. The 360 and ps3 are good examples… They’re good enough… Heck, the new ones arent event THAT much more powerful. My 2+yr old rig LAUGHS all over it.. LAUGHS. Kinda depressing actually. But I hear a lot of “oh, thats good enough. what more graphic fidelity etc etc, could one want??” I dunno…
Or maybe THIS is just a sign that society, as a whole (at least the first world), is recognizing that “bigger” isnt always “faster/stronger”. Enter ARM.
Maybe we’re waiting for our engineers and fab techs to solve that ol’ nano tech problem.
I dont think the world of APPS (we live in today) will stand the test of time. I still cringe at that word. I must have missed the memo saying that the words “program” and “software” were taken out of the dictionary. Another “gem” from the “closed-ecosystem” ninjas of Cupertino.
Once the Hardware gals/guys “figure” it out…The software boys/girls are gonna be BUSY. And 99 cents compensation probably isnt going to cut it… I dunno.
Edit: and it was probably just a thinly-veiled “dig” at said fruit company. Im suure they dont like one another.
