Google has an offer you might not refuse

Google has an offer for businesses that it hopes will be attractive enough to get them to abandon Windows complete instead of upgrading from WinXP to a new version of a Microsoft OS.  They are offering businesses $100 off any managed Chromebook or other ChromeOS device and $200 if it will be running VMWare Desktop as a Service.  For those who have to go through major upgrades and software re-writes this might be a reasonable alternative since these companies are less than pleased at the EOL of WinXP and now have an opportunity to try or at least test an alternative OS.  It is unlikely that Windows will go the way of "tamagotchis and parachute pants" Google's Amit Singh is quoted as saying by The Inquirer but the demise of WinXP offers a unique opportunity for change to many businesses which has previously been economically unfeasable.

So it's not necessarily the year of Linux on the desktop, but more of the year of Linux on the virtual desktop, as the traditional desktop disappears behind the cloud. This does not help the cnc machine shops running multimillion dollar equipment wedded to XP dependent applications, but the entire CNC industry should get its own Linux distro developed, and never again be under the M$ fickle thumb.
Windows 8 sure the hell is the parachute pants, and M$ keeps promising to return the full menu, but still there is tiles, and more empty promises. Hold on to your 7's as long as you can, and dual boot with a linux distro, plenty to choose from, and no EOL worries or legacy code problems.
Windows 7's EOL may very well be the Windows OS's EOL also!

No there will be Steam OS, and all will be fine with the big rigs, down to the PIs, OpenGL will be everywhere and close to the metal too. M$ can have what little mobile devices market share(not Much) it will have until its end, and as far as services they will be forced by competition into the small corner, befitting the has been. I'll have a Debian based good time!

We will all meet our demise before windows does. So, enjoy the OS you prefer, just know you will push up daisies prior to windows EOL.
