Desktop Trinity may be retarded

After launching the mobile version of Trinity, AMD let desktop users know that they could expect to see Socket FM2 processors released in the summer.  That may no longer be the case according to a report that DigiTimes heard about which puts the timeline closer to October.  Even worse, this delay is due to them making some changes to the processors design which hints at all sorts of horrible possibilities of which the best you can hope is that they are having yield problems.  Hoping that AMD just wants to see existing stock of Llano processors sold makes little sense, none of the major tech companies seems to feel any regret at pushing out new designs over top of old ones no matter how much stock currently exists.

Worth noting is that in October, assuming we do see Trinity launch, AMD will have current generation chips and motherboards using AM3, AM3+ (Vishera), FM1 (Llano), FM2 (Trinity) and FT1 (Brazos 2.0).  To say that this is going to confuse customers is an understatement.

"AMD has reportedly postponed the launch of its Trinity processors for desktop platforms from August to October in order to make some adjustments to the processors' designs. Downstream motherboard makers are also rushing to make adjustments to their new motherboard projects set to release in the second half, according to sources from motherboard makers."

Political correctness, especially the expurgation of perfectly good words, was best described by Lewis Carroll ...

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master — that's all.'

In fact it is exactly the word to be used as it specifically describes what has happened.

Definition of RETARD
transitive verb
1: to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment : impede
2: to delay academic progress by failure to promote

You can choose to take offense if you wish but I am not going to limit my vocabulary because you have assigned your own meaning to a word.  I would also suggest you stay as far away from Penn & Teller as you can.

I applaud you good sir.

Yeah but nobody who reads the title "Desktop Trinity may be retarded" is going to think "Desktop Trinity may be delayed." In fact, nobody uses the word "retarded" as a synonym for "delayed." It's a lot easier to just use the use "delayed."

Yeah delayed I can live with, if its performance was "retarded" now that would really suck. I mean no its not supposed to fight the i7 or even the i5 really but yeah double check what people think of your title Jeremy.

I actually know the full definition in its original sense. What I got from the title was that the PERFORMANCE of desktop trinity parts would be retarded. Since the word is meant in a slowing or limiting (rarely in form of time), as opposed to a date change which it would be more accurate to use a word like "withheld" or "delayed" (boring though that is.

I could not set my ignition timing right because it was too offensive going a few degrees BTDC

July 14, 2012 | 09:53 AM - Posted by Lou (not verified)

You must have an older engine, if you are manually setting timings by turning the distributor. Anything probably 10 years or newer has the ECU handle that stuff, and most new cars I have seen have individual coil packs for each cylinder.

More on topic, that's what I thought too when I read the title. You're either 'advancing' or 'retarding' the timing. Awkward word to use in this way, IMO, but not offensive at all.

(and if you're just a few degrees BTDC, your ignition is indeed too retarded. Should be about 15-25 degrees BTDC so you can leave a little time for combustion.)

You guys are making way too big a deal over this. People worry too much about what offends people.

Who knows, this may be a good thing. AMD may be making better HSA implementation changes earlier than expected. Or maybe they found a major defect that if fixed may increase performance dramatically. Who knows. This may turn out to be something big but we'll just have to wait and see. They have already released destkop Trinity though. You can purchase an HP desktop Trinity right now from Best Buy and maybe even a couple other places. This is confusing though, what AMD is really doing.

Everything AMD does nowadays is pretty much retarded.
