No one got the prize ($1 million) last year. The best effort was Carnegie Mellon University’s robot Hummer, Sandstorm.  It made it 7.3 miles out of the full 144-mile.  This time, at least in the semi-finals, we actually have teams finishing the course.  The finals are scheduled for Oct. 8th, with 20 of the 43 current semi-finalists trying their luck on a 175 mile course.  CNet has more …
“As if fulfilling a child’s fantasy, 43 robotic vehicles began racing around the California Speedway this week in a government-sponsored test of artificially intelligent machines. The winner–assuming that there is one this year–will take home $2 million.”
