As of just after midnight ET on Friday the 15th of April, we made the switch over to the new version of the PC Perspective website!  This is a very exciting (and daunting) time for us here on staff, so please bear with us as we fix the little hiccups that will occur during this time.  In fact, we need your help!  If you see something wrong, strange or something you just plain don't like, please leave us a comment in the are below after you have signed up for a new account.

We are counting on YOU to help make PCPer.com better for all of us!

Not only that be we are going to be giving away lots of PRIZES over the next couple of week thanks to our awesome sponsors that have stuck with us over the years.  Keep hitting up the home page for the first prizes to be revealed and how to win them...

I know you will have some questions and I will try to answer the most common ones right here.  If you have more, ask them in the comments and I will update this post accordingly!

  • The Forums haven't changed at all!
    • Nope, not yet, but they will be altered to the same style of appearance you see here very soon along with a VB version upgrade to boot.
  • Do I have to use a different login / account here on the main site rather than use my account from the forums?
    • You CAN use the same username / password from the forums if you want, but you DO have to create that new account here on the main PC Perspective page, however.
  • The "Latest Forums" tab on the right is empty
    • Yes, we know, thanks.  Working on that tighter integration with the forums!
  • There seems to be a lot of overlap between the "Latest Topics" and "Latest Reviews" and the flash thingy on the home page.
    • We agree and are working on ways to make it less redundant.
  • The Hardware Leaderboard is missing some content...
    • Yes, we are working on setting that up again today as well.  Sorry about that, it will be live again very soon!

So, you can comment now and all that jazz. What do you guys think?

Not a big fan of the new layout (please dont flame) been with the site since like 06, maybe it is just the familiarity, but I dont like it. It's too flashy. I check the site for reviews / updates between 2-6 times a day.. also it wont let me log in for some reason....

April 18, 2011 | 12:55 PM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion of course, but I hope you come around to it.

What username did you register and I'll check on it for you.

April 15, 2011 | 01:44 AM - Posted by JSL

Its all good that the new layout is finally being implemented.... but why not integrate the old obdc database with the new layout (yeah its a time consuming php rerwite)....

So will I now have to maintin two login now for pcperspective; one for the site, and one for the old forum?

April 15, 2011 | 01:44 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

The hope is that will NOT be the case, but for now it is, yeah... sorry! We tried to get it working previously but ran out of time (and it was a LONG time really). The VB system just didn't play well with Drupal (the CMS at work here) and cross server database authentication was being a pain.

Hope you still like the changes here!

April 15, 2011 | 02:25 AM - Posted by JSL

I know its been a long time, several months at least, since you originally posted it as the beta site in the forums. I figured Durpal was being used since its also the main CMS used for twit.tv. Hopefully you guy's can create a script to go through the old database and move certain data to corresponding placements within the new database and just write some extra code to filter out/truncate old forum 'code' from the data being transferred ( [] items).

Cheers to finally deploying the new format! I wonder how many people will be confused in the morning :P

Holy website changes, Batman!

Didn't know about the site change coming, so it was a shock. I approve! Much better -- especially the color scheme.

April 15, 2011 | 06:49 AM - Posted by Gotmilk

The layout, structure, etc. looks great. thanks guys:)

April 15, 2011 | 08:07 AM - Posted by FrivalousCabbage (not verified)

Check your RSS feeds Ryan, Itunes wasn't downloading the podcast for me. I was getting http://www.pcper.com/rss/podcasts.rss was not found on the server. Otherwise, looking really good. I've been reading since amdmb.com, this change really helps the readability. Keep up the hard work!

April 15, 2011 | 09:38 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

AHH, thanks, forgot about this!

April 15, 2011 | 08:20 AM - Posted by ThorAxe

Nice. any chance of a wide mode?

April 15, 2011 | 09:32 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

That is something we are hoping to do soon!

April 17, 2011 | 04:54 AM - Posted by SikSlayer (not verified)

Thank you! I'm not so happy with the overall look of the site personally, but I could easily live with it if it had a wide mode.

I think that's one unmentioned element of what distracting people from the new redesigns of sites like Gizmodo and its sister sites. They have gotten even thinner, as if they are trying to follow after the tablets. So many people have widescreen displays now, it should at _least_ be an option.

  • Like the new site, just wish it didn't break the podcast RSS feed. Could possibly redo the tabs for future expansion, but it looks good.
  • For the tabs: The top layer is "Home, News, Reviews, Forums, Pod, HW LB, SSD Dec."
  • Becomes: Components (and under that tab you have the cpu, case, cooling, etc. but make them look like tabs as above just a different shade or smaller)
  • Maybe have an editorial tab or something where news and reviews are combined (or just have a "news feed" section that links to stories around the web that isn't PC Per written news directly)
  • Forums, Pod, and maybe a tools section where you can post the HW LB and the SSD Dec. and allow for those to have new additions in the future insteam of expanding the MAIN tab section it changes the sub-tab section.
  • In terms of the sub section, I don't think shows/expos should be there, perhaps as the news or ED. section, seperate cases and cooling and add a section for "Power", revise "system" to "Pre-Built", and then move Pre-Built and Mobile to the end.
  • Again, this is minor stuff, just for the sake of making things easier on readers and make things have a bit more sense to them, but overall I do love the new temp.
April 15, 2011 | 10:02 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

Thanks for the feedback - podcast feed should be fixed now.

We are definitely looking at altering some of the tabs/organization but we needed it to be nearly feature-matched with the older site in order to do the transition process.

April 15, 2011 | 10:10 AM - Posted by nabokovfan87

The RSS is, but the podcast page isn't fixed, pcper.com/podcasts works now, but it doesn't link to correct page. And the RSS URL is not present on the podcast page itself, just inside the article (I think the info inside the RSS linking to the podcast URL and website may have been broken as well, it was last night, but for sure the article links need to be updated to the correct website URL). Please add some break html support, apparently it doesn't work, which is why my last post had to have a "list".

Example:

Line1
Line2
Line3

April 15, 2011 | 10:16 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

Yeah, I noticed the line break issue in your first post. We are working on that right now.

As for the podcast points, we will work on it today as well!

April 15, 2011 | 10:35 AM - Posted by nabokovfan87

Very cool, most times people don't see that stuff, just wanted to point it out, not take away from the work you did.

Edit: Maybe the "latest review" should be an espn style ticker, too many boxes in a row right there (3 in total)

April 15, 2011 | 10:44 AM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

looks good ryan, fresh new look.I like it!

April 15, 2011 | 11:42 AM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

The hardware leader board only has the dream system now. I really like the new site. Cool colors. I always thought you guys had great info and insight but lacked a good looking website. Now your site reflects your skill.

BTW I'm on Chrome BETA.

April 15, 2011 | 11:43 AM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

just saw you knew about the HW LB already.. sorry. Love the site again!

April 15, 2011 | 12:19 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

I have to say that I much prefer the previous theme.

April 15, 2011 | 12:38 PM - Posted by benefit14snake (not verified)

Ok, so for the 2nd look of the day it is kind of sort of growing on me =)

Good job guys!

April 15, 2011 | 01:19 PM - Posted by Roosauce (not verified)

Love the new layout guys. It took me about 6 months to work out that the little icons of the last site were sections. Te new layout is much more modern and clear.

April 15, 2011 | 01:27 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

Looks great on my HTC's thunderbolt , Loads anb scales fast. Flash player and tabs works excellent.

April 15, 2011 | 02:02 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

Nice and about time with the comments - most of the blogs I read most of the interesting, important and comedy is in the comments, I imagine you will now see you page views increase.
Well done.

April 15, 2011 | 02:57 PM - Posted by JSL

I could see a lot of issues arising in the comments in the form of spam and moderation. Just something to keep in mind while working out the kinks. ;)

April 15, 2011 | 04:49 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

omg this site went from decent to FUGLY. i used to come here every day and read the topics etc.. now its such an inelegant mess of a website :(

April 15, 2011 | 05:04 PM - Posted by djskinnyb

In the old format the news section articles would occasionally have related links at the bottom of the news article. I this format I have to click the "read more" in order to see these links. Doing this for each article in order to check for links is time consuming and aggravating. Please get the related links back on the main page.

April 16, 2011 | 09:03 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

Fair point, I think we can do that.

April 16, 2011 | 04:44 AM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

Echoing djskinnyb's sentiments about the article links. Please get them back on the front page!

April 16, 2011 | 05:59 AM - Posted by AlphaComputing (not verified)

Love it!

i have always thought pc per needed a update!

April 16, 2011 | 11:59 PM - Posted by @chefbenito (not verified)

Love the new site guys, keep up the good work!

April 17, 2011 | 02:15 PM - Posted by Mr. Perfect (not verified)

I feal old saying this, but I have to squint to read the text now. In Firefox 4 it looks like it's about ten point font. Could you bump it up a couple of points? 12 or 14, or whatever it was before?

April 18, 2011 | 10:57 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

We have had one or two comments to this degree - we are going to experiment with a slightly larger font, yes.

April 18, 2011 | 02:56 PM - Posted by Mr. Perfect (not verified)

Great, thanks.

April 18, 2011 | 10:11 AM - Posted by rmadball

made new account but your site gave me the password. How do you change it? Can't edit my own profile.
Other than that, the site looks freaken awesome :)

Update:
I found where you can edit profile. Really got to make it easier. The button (link) is so small and away from your line of site (on the right). I suggest using a button or icon and it should be placed on the left not the right. Using a link is kind of corny.

April 18, 2011 | 10:58 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

If you click on your name in the top header area, you can edit your profile there, right?

April 18, 2011 | 09:58 AM - Posted by rmadball

@Mr. Perfect.
Just hold control button and hit the + button. Text will get bigger for you lol

April 18, 2011 | 02:55 PM - Posted by Mr. Perfect (not verified)

That's a work around, but not a real solution. You'd have to reduce it again when you browse to other sites, otherwise they'd look like they came out of the large print section of the library.

April 19, 2011 | 09:01 AM - Posted by truk007

I am so glad we are able to add comments to the reviews, finally! Great job on the new look!

April 26, 2011 | 12:21 PM - Posted by nabokovfan87

I don't know if it can be changed, but on the window that loops the latest 5 posts, can the loop with the numbers be moved out of the way. The pictures are completely cut off and you can't see them.

April 26, 2011 | 09:44 PM - Posted by truk007

I don't know if you're addressing this or not, but after logging in to my account the search bar disappears. Not that it's a big deal to log out.

April 29, 2011 | 04:35 PM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

What search bar disappears? Can you show me a screenshot?

April 27, 2011 | 06:44 PM - Posted by Peter from Australia (not verified)

Hi, First let me say that this site is one of the most informative for tech, and I read every day. However, I much prefer the old setup, why?. It used all of the screen area, now it only uses the center of the screen. I use a 24" full HD screen and now I have unused wasted space on either side of the screen. This to me is a waste of screen space. Yes have a new format, but use all of the screen, please. Keep up the great stuff.

April 27, 2011 | 09:09 PM - Posted by amdcrankitup

I think the layout on you site is just fine it has more than an abundance of reviews and current news and just filled with so much content it just like a one stop shoping place for the latest in technolgy! Im not really sure Im the one you should be asking aftre a couple of brain surgeries my mind has the ability to loose its cognitive thinking skills and totally loose track of what Im thinking and why so someone more focused would be a better candidate for site feedback but I seem to be able to navigate ok!The only thing I have a problem with that is a GOOD Problem to have is the the amount of giveaways youhave had here lately which like I said to me is just another oppurtunity to get blessed with a win on something I could use and need so keep them coming because I want to win and have a good day for once in a while and maybe make it easier to see who the winners are so I will know if I have got so lucky! Thanks guys sorry for the xtra long answer but like I said those cognitive thinking skill have been diminshed but no its not old times! LOL Im just a 55 year ole geek that loves computers, overclocking, modding and just sheer raw power!

April 27, 2011 | 09:17 PM - Posted by SHAWN3985

I definitely like the new layout. It was a bit to get used to at first but I do like it now. Great job on site and thank you OCZ for being a sponsor. Thanks Ryan...

April 28, 2011 | 10:04 AM - Posted by carlos (not verified)

great site..only one thing can you post the podcast a little more quickly

April 28, 2011 | 05:39 PM - Posted by willie242

Thank's OCZ for its sponsorship of PC Perspective. The new site sure is pretty; but it will take a little getting used to the layout.

April 29, 2011 | 08:19 PM - Posted by slugbug55

When you post contest winners can you post them in the original post if possible please.

May 4, 2011 | 01:23 PM - Posted by shawn811

Thanks OCZ for sponsoring the contest.

(Noticed there is already a FAQ explanation already). The forums login I created isn't the same as the new pcper.com login. No biggie, I just made the same login/pass on both forums and the new pcper.com.

On my browser (Firefox 4 on mac, fully updated) all the content is cut off to the left hand side as shown here: http://bayimg.com/DAInGaADd

Was kind of tricky to post this too, since I had to turn off the page style to see the invisible word verification thingy.

May 23, 2011 | 10:12 AM - Posted by amdcrankitup

I think the layout of the site is just great its easy to navigate and appealing to the eyes great job!!

Hello, I would like to thank Asus for their offer of an incredible piece of hardware. They make some of the best PC componants in the world. As for what I would like to see in the future with Graphics Cards, Three screen capabillity on a single GTX570,580,590, using HDMI 1.4a, More RAM, and make the cards wider rather then longer, then the new vapor changers could be bigger to keep the cards cooler.

May 23, 2011 | 02:36 PM - Posted by Robert Looney (not verified)

The site is awesome and has a great deal to offer enthusiasts and mdoest user as well. Thanks to Asus for sponsoring PC Perspectives looking frward to find more current and historical information. I love to find benchmamrking of current gear vs legacy setups.

also like to see explanations of how or why software is able to take advantage of hardware innovations.
