Chips are hot this year, an increase in sales volume of 27% in Q1, 24% in Q2 and similar growth is expected over the coming year. Unfortunately for AMD and Intel most of these chips are in mobile devices, a market which neither company has leveraged successfully as of yet; PC chip sales have declined steadily over the previous quarters. The only good news is for AMD who managed to take a slightly larger share of this shrinking market. Both companies are going to have to become much more focussed on the ultra low voltage mobile market if they want to remain profitable, which means less development on high end desktop processors. "PROCESSOR CHIP SALES will increase by almost quarter this year thanks to the growing demand for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, analyst outfit IHS has predicted."

As soon as AMD begins
As soon as AMD begins releasing an ARM based HSA aware APU, they will begin to prosper in the mobile market! Intel is still in an x86 state of denial! The x86 based CPUs from Intel and AMD will battle it out for the High end mobile tablet, non Apple market, based on each companies’ low power x86 designs, with AMD offering better graphics, and Intel trying to catch up. The entire market is shifting to CPUs, and GPUs as a commodity, and the ARM type business model. OEMs will not be buying finished products CPUs/GPUs much longer, but they will instead begin licensing CPU and GPU IP, and having custom designs fabbed at third party chip foundrys. Nvidia has announced the future licensing of its GPU technology to third party mobile manufacturers, and AMD may soon follow. OEM’s will never return to the days where they were at the mercy of a single CPU/GPU supplier, and no mobile device OEM will ever have their entire device portfolio designed around a single manufacturers CPUs, but they will have many SKUs from low end/cost ARM based designs to high end x86 designs! But, as Apple has shown, based on their custom ARM (Clones), the ARM 64 instruction set based designs will begin to compete with x86 in the high end tablet, and low end Netbook/laptop market, especially after AMD and Nvidia make their GPU IP more available through licensing in the mobile devices market.
