With 160 days remaining until the current official support expiration for WinXP unless you are willing to pay for the privilege of getting critical updates there is only a little time left in which third party providers need to continue support for the aging OS. Two of the most noticeable of these will be Firefox and Chrome, both of which will be discontinuing development for their browsers on WinXP. Their older versions will still work but will slowly succumb to more and more security vulnerabilities as they are discovered but not patched for WinXP. This may not be the straw that breaks XP's back but recall that YouTube abandoning IE6 support was one of the driving forces behind the decline of that browser. Slashdot comments for your entertainment here.
An update to this information does show that you have a while to go before this is a major concern as Firefox does not have a specific date in mind and Chrome is extending development for a few years yet. You should still really consider upgrading to Win7 in the near future.
"While Windows XP is still going strong the sun is rapidly setting on this old platform fast. Firefox plans to end support for XP which means no security fixes or improvements. Chrome is being discontinued a little later as well for Windows XP. Windows XP has its die-hard users refusing to upgrade as they prefer the operating system or feel there is no need to change."

XP will still have Opera.
XP will still have Opera. Laugh all you want, but the latest Opera still installs on Win2K SP3 and some need that particular OS in very very niche situations.
Google will continue to
Google will continue to support XP until at least 2015. Mozilla did not announce discontinuing XP support (they just confirmed they have no plans to but, also, would not commit to a minimum). Not sure who reported Firefox and Chrome were deprecating XP.
Microsoft should support XP
Microsoft should support XP indefinitely. After all MS profited in the hundreds of millions from selling XP.
Hell of a nonsense you posted
Hell of a nonsense you posted here. For too many reasons including technical. (Also support length is at upper end of all systems.)
i am actually a tad upset
i am actually a tad upset here- people are actually selling refurbished machines with microsoft XP Refurbished volume licenses= and i mean they are selling them today!
so someone picks up a core 2 duo machine, it comes with a throw-a-way os that won’t be supported within a year and the they don;’t really know any better
to make it worse- it’s usually the only machine they can afford
good one Microsoft for still giving out xp licenses
Short of enterprise account I
Short of enterprise account I don’t think Microsoft is selling any new licenses. What you see is depletion of stock and exhausting volume licenses. (There is most liky quite few millions of unused licenses…)
What sort of cheapskate
What sort of cheapskate wouldn’t want to upgrade from XP to 7? I loved XP and it’s just archaic, designed for a different era. I can understand not wanting a bar of 8, but not 7.
Microsoft and software vendors should just abandon it completely to get people to migrate.
The title is silly. IE on XP
The title is silly. IE on XP will always be older and more vulnerable than the other browsers.
Most people who talk about
Most people who talk about getting rid of xp because windows 7 is out seem to only be able to use the reasoning of it being old but they can never offer any solid explanation to back up their answer.
If XP is already doing everything you want, then what do you main from upgrading. If windows 7 was so much better at preventing infections then why is the computer repair business thriving with so many windows 7 users paying to get their systems cleaned/ fixed?
For the vast majority of users, all upgrading will really offer them is a newer version of direct x (which means little if they are not gamers)
Furthermore, some users find the speed of windows xp to be more valualable to a few new features in windows 7 that they will never use.
Most people do not realize how fast windows xp can run on modern hardware.
Here is a quick video I did with xp running on an over locked Phenom II based system with a we black hard drive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLsNxKjp9L8
XP is an older OS designed for a time when 1 GHz was a dream, and hard drives barely did 20 MB/s linear. Pair that with modern multicore CPU’s with exponentially higher IPC running at nearly 4 GHz’ and hard drives that can do 120 MB/s and up, or even SSD’s, and you have an extremely snappy OS that uses very few resources, gets the same tasks done with minimal IO, and just makes an OS like windows 7 feel sluggish when things that had no niticale delay now have a delay that you can notice (even if that delay is extremely small) it is noticeable when previously it was not, and that makes things feel sluggish.
Also pretty much every single security vulnerability in xp has also been found in windows 7
Remember, a programmer does not intentionally make their code with these security issues. And you can’t fix a security issue that you did not know about, which is why newly discovered security issues have been impacting every version of windows.
Somebody wanted to cram as
Somebody wanted to cram as many incorrect statements into a single post?
Old code is old code. You can try to patch it, but there are limits after them you can’t. (See NT 4.0 and its EOL)
AS for repair shops – simple: Idiots are idiots and will fall for many things. (There is a reason why majority of malware are Trojans and bundled stuff)
XP fast on modern hardware? Forget this kind of nonsense. It can’t use properly likely half of features of current HW. (So any perception of speed is, because half of things are missing.)Also number of services in XP running automatically is much higher then in 7.
BTW: Stability of XP is nowhere near of 7. (GPU and soundcards where very popular source crashes, but nowadays it requires quite effort to get STOP)
Well, you can run XP on SSD, but don’t be surprised it won’t perform as well as under 7. (missing TRIM and like)
As for security vulnerabilities, you are very wrong. (BTW: Quite lot of them are no longer reported, because they aren’t rated critical and thus not eligible for fix) Not to mention that XP lacks most of newer protections. (And those backported like DEP are not as effective, because they can be bypassed by other techiques, which are target of other parts of security technology like ASLR)
I don’t think there were more then bits of truth in your post…
