Well, the date has been set. AMD publicly stated on its @AMDRadeon Twitter account that a new version the prototype driver we originally previewed with the release of the Radeon HD 7990 in April will be released to the public on July 31st. For a problem that many in the industry didn't think existed.
Big news for CrossFire! We plan to release our driver that delivers improved multi-GPU frame pacing on July 31. More info soon.

Since that April release AMD has been very quiet about its driver changes and actually has refused to send me updated prototypes over the spring. Either they have it figured out or they are worried they haven't – but it looks like we'll find out at the end of next month and I feel pretty confident that the team will be able to address the issues we brought to light.
For those of you that might have missed the discussion, our series of Frame Rating stories will tell you all about the issues with frame pacing and stutter in regards to AMD's CrossFire multi-GPU technology.

AMD gave the media a prototype driver in April to test with the Radeon HD 7990, a card that depends on CrossFire to work correctly, and the improvements were pretty drastic.
So what can we expect on July 31st? A driver that will give users the option to disable or enable the frame pacing technology they are developing – though I am still of the mindset that disabling is never advantageous. More to come in the next 30 days!
amd need to revisit their
amd need to revisit their basic setting !a lot of automatic stuff is plain wrong!
ycbcr 4.4.4 ! nobody in the normal computing needs that! the max we all get is ycbcr 4.2.2 and almost everybody need ycbcr 4.2.0!so basicly we should have ycbcr 4.2.2 and ycbcr 4.2.0 (just one exemple)of numerous small stuff that make a huge difference in quality !scaling is another thing that need to be revisited at gpu end ! i m all for fixing issue like this here but often these issue pop up because other thing aren’t set as they should be . hopefully amd will revisit their base and after fix the rest !like this issue you cover here ! yes its there but it might be caused by something else entirely in the gpu code or gpu bios ! amd tend to patch without looking into bugs . like image is jagged lets put a filter why bother looking into the code ! I say amd but all do it ! yes including ms ! ycbcr 4.4.4 was expected but in reality normal user don’t have it ! yes it means amd engineer might need to read various standard and mods accordingly ! not much we can do on that front !h264 isn’t going away and h265 is gona be here soon ! ya a lot of automatic setting are plain wrong !
maybe too many ! ?! 😀 I
maybe too many ! ?! 😀 I think that’s too late for somebody, not read really good comments about…they know since time ago and many customers are not happy, since April the end of July is good only if they do a complete revolution… so I will expect the smoothest gameplay in the world ^__^
Umm… what?
Umm… what?
Quite.
Quite.
Quite.
Quite.
Why the damn nvidia and
Why the damn nvidia and geforce tags? Turn down the bias a little please.
Because Nvidia is mentioned
Because Nvidia is mentioned in the benchmark? When you add tags you add pretty much everything you can think of that is remotely relevant to the article.
Actually, wouldn’t it be more
Actually, wouldn't it be more biased to not include Nvidia? 🙂
July 31st can’t come soon
July 31st can’t come soon enough for the owner of a pair of 7970’s! Keep the info rolling!
Has there been any word on if
Has there been any word on if this fix will work with 6900 series?
Yeah, this will only work
Yeah, this will only work with 7000 series cards I'm told.
Thanks for the reply. I have
Thanks for the reply. I have been wondering about that for a while now..
I suppose AMDs solution for that is i sell my cards?
Have they mentioned if they plan on supporting 6900 series ever? They are just going to leave us in the dark?
Hmm that sucks. At least I
Hmm that sucks. At least I wasn’t expecting this.
I hope you can keep the pressure on AMD until everything is fixed, for all AMD videocards.
I’m running two HD5850’s in Crossfire since one and half year because I could get a second card pretty cheap. But if AMD is thinking that people with old video cards should just buy a new video card then my next video card definitely will be a Nvidia video card…
Keep up the great work! I’m very grateful for all the hard work you and your team have done.
Thats unfortunate for APU
Thats unfortunate for APU customers (as all there APUs are STILL based on the 6000 series despite what the naming scheme implies….). Customers who want to crossfire their APU with a 6570/6670 will not be helped by this? Seems odd considering how focused they will be on the platform moving forward…..

1. Nil I don’t have the official response but I will tell u the 6XXX series is of a different architecture. 6xxx is VLIW4 and the 7xxx/8xxx are GCN. Using a educated guess I would say no at this point.
2. Cannot wait for what AMD has planned because this year I am getting the best bang for buck card(s) this fall and I’m not sure who that will be yet. These new drivers will help me at least allow AMD into my machine.
That’s just great, I remember
That’s just great, I remember reading the 7990 review with its prototype driver. It still had many advantages over a 690. Lets see how the July drivers are, if AMD made an announcement I expect something good. Im planning on adding another 7950 come this fall for BF4 so this is good news.
Of course they haven’t
Of course they haven’t figured it out or they’d already be bragging and have slammed it out to their ignorant fanboys.
What’s coming is some half baked patchwork that will attempt cheats and implement the same.
It will take 5 years for the industry to notice AMD megacheats in the “new driver” just like they covered up 10 sorry incidents of total fraud and backed up the fraud for the raging AMD famboys.
stutter sttuer mouse cursor blurb sound scratch buzz grey screen of death hack xml file it resets circle jerk radiant lines false perfect circle hack lies – it goes on and on and on
Thankfully they are DUMPING everything but the 7000 series in the hacked up no fix and allow everyone to disable it because it blows so badly as usual.
And why shouldn’t they with the AMD crybaby fans who hate nVidia with a passion no matter what they could include moldy cheese wads on every AMD card and the fanboys would scream their rig smells great now that the new AMD card was hugged and kissed before inserting it and reformatting their entire system because they had to.

Where did you get that?
Where did you get that?

It’s been passed around on a few forums the past 2 weeks already, and I think It was posted on Station Drivers last week.
I’m running them now… a little quirky at some points in regards to the pointer (while in some games) phasing in and out of view.. but overall, frame rates seem to have been smoothed out (I noticed a difference)
I’m curious if this will do
I’m curious if this will do anything with 6900 series. Has anybody tried it?
I’m not feelin much love from AMD right now.

So i was feelin lucky today, and installed it for my 6900s.
It seems to work. I don’t know why they haven’t said anything about it.
Maybe its just a placebo effect, but my frame time graph says otherwise.
So far i have only played 2 games, BF3 (Frostbite 2), and War of the Roses (Unreal Engine [3?]).
Smooth as butter. Now Its not perfect by any means, there are still some spikes, but they are MUCH less frequent now.
Just wanted to share my experience
Framerating is an interesting
Framerating is an interesting testing strategy – and needs to be performed now each time the video cards come out- until they are fixed in hardware.
note I said hardware
so July will come and i expect amd will have a decent first time software fix, and each time a new catalyst comes out a new software fix will be part of it.
and the new video card architecture i would hope would include the hardware to prevent the issues in the future.
that is IF AMD can figure out a way to institute a hardware fix without impinging on an Nvidia patent
I call BS on hardware frame
I call BS on hardware frame metering it’s all software
We of cause will never actually know the truth as there is nothing to go on but nvidia’s say so.
Makes for good marketing strategy though, claiming it’s hardware based
I doubt they put in patents for it, whatever it is
