A combination of rumors and news pieces found online and in some recent conversations with partners indicates that February will see the release of a new super-high-end graphics card from NVIDIA based on the GK110 GPU. Apparently using the name "Titan" based on a report from Sweclockers.com, this new single GPU card will feature 2688 CUDA cores, compared to the 1536 in the GeForce GTX 680.
If true, the name Titan likely refers to the Cray super computer of the same name built using GK110 Kepler Tesla cards. Sweclockers.com's sources are quoted with the clocks of this new super-GPU as well: 732 MHz core clock and 5.2 GHz GDDR5 memory clock. While those numbers are low compared to the 1000+ MHz speeds of the GK104 parts out today, this GPU would have 75% more compute units and presumably additional memory capacity as well. The memory bus width of 384-bits is a 50% increase as well which would indicate another big jump in performance over current cards. The CUDA core count of 2688 is actually indicative of a GK110 GPU with a single SMX disabled as well.
The NVIDIA Titan card will apparently be the replacement for the GeForce GTX 690, a dual-GK104 card launched in May of last year. The performance estimate for the Titan is approximately 85% of that GTX 690 and if the rumors are right it would see an $899 price tag.
Based on other conversations I have had recently you should only expect those same partners that were able to sell the GTX 690 to stock this new GK110-based part. There won't be any modifications and you will see very little differentiation between vendors branding on it. If dates are to be believed, we are hearing that a Feb 25th (or at least that week) launch is the current target.
I actually might spring for
I actually might spring for one of these if it’ll pull more than three times a single 7970 in GPGPU performance.
Otherwise, too much $$$ for too little bang.
3x the performance of an
3x the performance of an HD7970 in GPGPU? That might happen in the year 2015-2016.
HD7970 @ 1150mhz overclock has 4.7 Tflops of single precision and 1.18 Tflops of double precision performance. To get 3x the SP performance would mean this chip needs 2.6Ghz GPU clock. Considering Nvidia has always neutered the double precision of its consumer cards, this Kepler Titan might not even retain the 1/3 DP of Telsa parts.
Also, this part is not competing with HD7970 Ghz but HD8970. I bet in GPGPU, a 2560 SP HD8970 will beat this chip for hundreds of dollars less.
soooo.. how much of AMD tech
soooo.. how much of AMD tech is in that new product there >_>
If they don’t botch this I’m
If they don’t botch this I’m in…..
wait wait wait….85%
wait wait wait….85% performance of a 690….THEY JUST BOTCHED IT!!!
my thoughts exactly…….
my thoughts exactly…….
Or about 180% of a single GTX
Or about 180% of a single GTX 680.
If you can hang 5 monitors on this card, i am maybe interested, as a replacement for my 3x 7970s, as the card will come with 6GB.
As i am gaming on 5x 1200×1920 for a 6000×1920 gaming resolution, i could have a benefit of the better mem-controller, and the stronger GPU in general.
I also wonder how high this card will clock on high-end water cooling.
I just wait till there is a 8970 with 6GB to compare it with.
At 2560×1600, GTX690 is
At 2560×1600, GTX690 is barely 60% faster than an HD7970GE. GTX690 is not 180% of a GTX680. Since this card is rumored to be 85% of GTX690’s performance that means, it will be roughly 35-40% faster than HD7970 GE (216 * 85% / 137)
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/VTX3D/Radeon_HD_7870_XT_Black/28.html
For multi-monitors / high resolutions, NV cards do even worse. HD7970 x 3 is 58% faster than GTX680 SLI:
http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/grafikkarten/2012/3x-gtx-680-und-3x-hd-7970-mit-i7-3970x/5/
As this card is only 85% of GTX690, it will be way slower than HD7970x3. You are better off selling those 7970s and getting HD8970s if they are $549 a piece. Or just wait for GTX770 at a more reasonable price.
On ONE GPU, not two, for $150
On ONE GPU, not two, for $150 less.
Price to performance seems
Price to performance seems about right if the 85% holds true.
Not exactly. Prices drop over
Not exactly. Prices drop over time on the price/performance technology curve. GTX690 is not really a $1000 GPU today, unless you think so. If things worked like you describe, then each time NV replaced its flagship single GPU, it would raise prices. That’s not how GPU industry works. GTX280 –> GTX480 –> GTX580 –> GTX680 prices didn’t magically go up to $900 for more performance. NV generally stayed in the $499-649 band (especially last 3 generations). This card is just a $$ grab before 20nm Maxwell. I bet a $549 Maxwell GTX880 will smoke this in by Q2 2014.
I don’t really see the point
I don’t really see the point of this card.
I mean it’s awesome but we already have a 680 which is damn good, and the 690 for those who just have to have the best.
Did they really need another card in that top end lineup?
Yes they do need another
Yes they do need another card. For those of us that want similar to GTX 690 performance but without SLI
8800GTX = $599
GTX280 = $649
8800GTX = $599
GTX280 = $649 but 1 month later fell $499
GTX480 = $499
GTX580 = $499
GTX680 = $499
$899 for a next gen flagship is a rip-off. This sounds like another 7800GTX 512MB or 8800GTX Ultra temporary money grab until NV brings out a card with 90% of the performance of the Titan for half the price. Not buying NV’s tactics this round. I remember how that played out last time they did this.
From what ive been seeing
From what ive been seeing this is a “sidestep” from the GTX 600 series.
Meaning I dont think this card will be a GTX 700 series card.
I think nvidia will prob call it, “GTX 690 TITAN” or “GTX 690 TITAN Edition”
I still wonder if we will see GK110 in GeForce GTX 700 series form…
I agree. This wont likely be
I agree. This wont likely be the next gen GTX but more like a GK110 for consumers. Its thermals and power draw, given the added cores and transistors, will either make this and unattractive beast or its clocks will prevent it from reaching full potential.
In any case, its a lateral shift. I think the 780 will be around 25-30% + the 680. A jump like this at the high end (GTX) could be bad for business although good for consumers.
ROFL Glad I skipped the 600
ROFL Glad I skipped the 600 series, then again I wasn’t dumb enough to throw cash down the toilet last year.
I’ll certainly be getting 2 of these c**ts!
Since the launch of the
Since the launch of the “Nvidia Geforce GTX 680″ it was absolutely obvious to me, that Nvidia just upped a mid-rage card to their high-end segment of the consumer marked. That worked well because ATI could not really compete with Nvidia. So there we are – Nvidia has no names left to use for their real “Geforce GTX 680″ and so they have to come up with something like “Geforce Titan”. It was just maximization of profit on their side and a convenient way to raise the price tags of their cards. And it gets even better because now they can cash again with the “Geforce Titan”. LMAO
yea, so why compare this
yea, so why compare this Kepler GK100 / Geforce Titan to Geforce 690GTX when latter has TWO 680GTX GPU’s and what is the average price of 690GTX? 1000 dollars?
Besides that, 680GTX has 1536 CUDA cores and 2GB of RAM, so with simple math.. 690GTX has 3072 and 4GB of RAM (with 2 GPU’s)
And Geforce Titan can have UP TO 2880 CUDA cores with 1 GPU (not forgetting that 6GN of RAM), in other words 1344 more than 680GTX so of course compared to 690GTX, Titan would have “only” 85% power that 690GTX has.
Then again one can say, that Titan is 85% faster than 680GTX and costs less than two 680GTX. So you have the situation where you need to buy 2x 680GTX cards to beat the Titan card.
Besides every way you look this, it’s honestly useless to compare Titan to 690GTX because 2 GPU’s vs 1 GPU. Even then, IF nvidia would make 2 GPU Titan this would be useless topic.. ‘5760 CUDA cores with 12GB of GDDR5’ 😎
gah.. ** 6GB of RAM **
gah.. ** 6GB of RAM **
It’s practically another Mars
It’s practically another Mars rip off card, seems they like doing this only a few months before the real cards come, in this case 700 series. so i’ll be getting a 780 or 790 to game at 1920×1080.
Got to have 60+fps as often as possible.
To think that this card is
To think that this card is intended for gaming is to MISS the meaning of its name and intended customer. It is named ‘Titan’ because everyone in the HPC (High-performance computing) i.e. know about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_(supercomputer)
which is full of Nvidia K20X GPU’s.
The NVIDIA GK110 based GeForce GPU ‘Titan’
This card is intended for people doing Science. What the scientific community want is a cheaper version of the K20…. that IS a Kepler Arch and supports a compute capability of 3.5 for Dynamic Parallelism. No other board except the K20 GT110 support Dynamic Parallelism!
This is essential for hard problems.
If non of this means anything to you- then clearly this board was not intend for you.
This board IS not about graphics, (most) of the boards in the Titan_(supercomputer) are not
for graphics. To compare it to cards used for graphics is to miss the point of its intended
customer!
Any comparison to any earlier version any GTX OR ANY other nvidia board (other then the K20) OR any board by ANY other company no matter how fast is irrelevant. The scientific community only cares about one thing-Dynamic Parallelism on the CUDA platform.
