One last look at GTAV graphics settings

[H]ard|OCP is concluding their series on GTA V graphical settings with a look at various anti-aliasing technologies and shadowing options. Their testing shows that TXAA has a much greater effect on textures than FXAA but that change is not necessarily a good thing for your textures.  MSAA is not only less than effective in the game but also comes with a performance hit that makes it a rather unattractive option except in certain situations.  They also cover AMD CHS and NVIDIA PCSS soft shadow technologies and the visual effects that high resolution shadows provide.  If you are still tweaking your GTA V settings then head over to check the review out.

Make sure to head over to the Gaming forum if you haven't already as this Saturday May 30, starting at 10:00 AM ET it is the Fragging Frogs Virtual LAN party #10.  You need to confirm your attendance in this thread if you want a shot at some of the many prizes being given out by AMD, Fractal Designs and maybe even other secret prizes.  The thread also covers how to log into the TeamSpeak server as well as the gamut of games likely to be played; make sure you install any patches or mods before we kick off to maximize your gaming time.

"In our final look at Grand Theft Auto V we will look at image quality comparisons in this game. We will focus on the main graphics options that affect performance the most and we will get to the bottom of which soft shadow option is best to use. We will also find out if FXAA and TXAA affect texture quality."

That's right, for those of you who pre-ordered Homeworld Remastered and for anyone that pops by Steam to purchase it, your productivity is in for a serious hit as you try to guide your fleet to a new homeworld and then defend it.  For those lucky and old enough to have played through it originally you will find the look vastly improved and from what Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN and other reviewers have found you will also love the improved interface.  For those who have not had the pleasure of playing through these two games before, the $33 investment is more than worth it, especially with improved multiplayer coming in the near future.  Check out the videos and overview of the poster child for revamped legacy games here.

You will have to take a break this Saturday though, as the Fragging Frogs Virtual LAN party #9 kicks off at 10AM ET and will end when the last frog drops.  You can check out the official thread in the forums right here to get all the information you need to participate.  AMD and other mystery sponsors will be giving away prizes to those who log into and participate in the TeamSpeak channels; not to mention it is the best way to chat in game and in the general lobby.  You can also check out the list of games that will be played as well as links to the mods and patches you will need, please download and install them before Saturday to maximize your playing time.  See you there!

"In terms of strategy games which ‘need’ remastering, Homeworld was probably somewhere at the bottom of the list. But in terms of strategy games which really, truly benefit from remastering – well, this is a chart-topper."

If you are not already a member of the PC Perspective Forums you will need to register as a member in order to be eligible to win the prizes given away during the VLAN.  The registration thread is right here, sign your name to be eligible and please read through the links to the guides which explain how to log into the Teamspeak channel, the games that will be played and the patches and add-on files that need to be installed to ensure you spend more time playing and less time downloading.  iamApropos will once again be streaming the action live via TWITCH.TV so even if you can't participate for some reason you can have fun vicariously.  Be sure to thank our game hosts, organizers and sponsors as it takes a lot of time and effort to set these events up.

See you there, in the mean time here is a video to get you even more excited.

Several rowboats worth of snacks, a couple of canoe-fulls of assorted beverages and boatloads of fun were had this weekend in the highly successful 7th Fragging Frogs VLAN; if you missed it there will be another chance some day but you really missed an epic event.  There were over 120 Teamspeak connections in a variety of channels and an estimated peak of 78 active participants.  Thanks to AMD there is a new game for the Frogs as well as Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare was a hit both to the players and to those watching iamApropos' live stream.  We also gained some ARMA 2 fans which will not only appear again next VLAN but is also in danger of becoming a frequent activity for some members.

If you haven't yet signed up in the official thread, stocked up on snacks and beverages and reserved all of the weekend for gaming then maybe this will excite you enough to change your plans.

By the way, Play Battlefield 4 Free for a Week. Origin Game Time is On!  It is a rather popular choice with the Frogs so if you don't have it that is no excuse!

You should also consider subscribing to TornTV where you can find a lot of Fragging Frog and PC Perspective action.   There will also be a live stream where you can show off your skills, or lack thereof, to the whole internet!

That's right! It's time for another Fragging Frogs VLAN Party!

Saturday August the 9th you should stock up on snacks and beverages as the seventh Virtual LAN Party kicks of at 10AM EDT and goes until the last member drops!  WarSam can't make it but we are putting pressure on amd_Roy to show up so you can take potshots at one of your favourite vendors.  Once again the prizes will be bountiful but this time they are a secret so if you even want to know what is being given away, let alone win anything you are going to have to show up!  Not only that but you must registered at the PCPer forums and post to this thread to confirm your attendance; we run a very strict pond after all.

The thread also contains the list of suggested games, the IP addresses of servers, a link on how to connect to the (upgraded) PCPer TeamSpeak server and most especially the names of those people you should thank for putting in the massive amounts of effort required to put these events together.  See you there!
