MSI and HTC team up for Vive support as well as two tools for streamers

Along with the hardware that MSI is teasing us with at CES comes a project worthy of note.  It would seem that MSI has been working with HTC to provide out of the box support for the Vive, assuming you buy components with the power to push that many pixels at the necessary speed.  There is little meat as to the specifics but any work done before the product is released which gives first adopters a helping hand is a valuable thing when it comes to sales.

HTC-Vive_White.jpg

For those gamers who love to livestream their gaming sessions or record them for editing and later publication should take a peek at Dragon Eye and Nahimic 2, two new software tools MSI will be releasing.  Nahimic 2 is an HD Audio Recorder to ensure captured or broadcasted audio is of high quality and also includes Sound Tracker which will give you graphic indications of noise sources in games, assuming you would stoop that low.  Dragon Eye is for video and its usage is also quite different from Nahamic2.  It will allow you to easily use its picture-in-picture feature to watch Youtube videos and other streams in a small window while you are gaming.

At the very least it will be handy to see your team mates screen or to watch a walkthrough while playing a game, again assuming a certain moral turpitude on the part of the player.

Four full systems announced by MSI, Vortex Gaming Tower Impresses

Subject: Systems, Shows and Expos | January 6, 2016 - 09:04 AM |
Tagged: Vortex Gaming Tower, Nightblade X2, Nightblade MI2, msi, Gaming 27XT, Cubi 2 Plus, CES

Along with the laptops comes three full sized prebuilt systems and a mini-PC at MSI's display booth.  Most are customizable, the price you pay depends on the components you choose and the case you prefer, two of which have picked up awards.

3_2.png

First we have the Vortex Gaming Tower which as you can see from the picture is not configured like a normal PC at all.  The cylindrical shape is 6.5 litres, about 1.7 gallons which is an odd measurement but does mean the case is rather small.  Don't let that fool you about the interior components, it comes with two GTX 980's in SLI and their proprietary 360° Silent Storm Cooling.

MSI - Gaming 27XT.JPG

The Gaming 27XT comes with an impressive and almost unique feature, support for an external GPU.  It is an All-in-One PC, with a 144Hz display and is likely powered by Intel's HD graphics if you do not choose to mount a GPU on the back of the display.  The placement should also help keep that GPU cool by separating its airflow from the rest of the components.  Nahimic Audio Enhancer and a Killer Lan NIC come standard.

nightblade.png

The familiar Nightblade Series gains two new members, the Nightblade X2 and MI2.  The systems both use a Skylake motherboard with the X2 being compatible with cards up to the GTX 980ti and the MI2 stopping at the 970.  As you should expect both systems use  Military Class 4 components and come with a variety of tools from MSI.

MSI-Cubi 2 Plus.png

Last comes the tiny Cubi 2 Plus system, competition for the NUC and ZBOX.  It will be powered by a 6th Gen Skylake-S processor so it will be more than capable of handling duties as a media server.  More importantly it has support for both an M.2 SSD and  a 2.5" SSD ensuring you are not forced into using a drive you would rather not have.  You can also see four USB ports on the front which means plenty of room for expansion even with a mouse and keyboard connected.

Keep your eyes peeled for more detailed information as the team on the ground visits the MSI booth in person.

MSI has number of neat new laptops for you

MSI is revealing a long list of laptops, systems, motherboards, GPUs, and even new software to use.  Up first are the laptops, of which there are three.  The GS40 Phantom is a 14" gaming laptop with a Skylake processor and NVIDIA GTX 970M graphics but yet weighs only 3.75 lbs and is less than 0.87 inches thick.

Next up is the larger GT72S Tobii which offers a unique feature, Tobii Eye-Tracking technology built into the laptop.  That allows facial recognition and eye tracking in applications and games, currently this would apply to Windows Hello, which enables Windows 10 biometric authentication and eye-tracking functionality.  In the near future the release of Tom Clancy’s The Division will add a game to the list of supported applications.  You can read more about them here.

MSI are also updating their Stealth lineup with the GS72 Stealth Pro, which currently features a 4k screen, with another model coming out very soon with a non-4K display for those who don't see the point of such a high resolution on a 17" laptop.  It is also rather thin, at 0.78".

GS72 Stealth Pro.jpg

To finish up the laptops is the workhorse, the WS72 Workstation.  This comparatively thick laptop is powered by an Intel Xeon and is certified to work with a long list of professional applications such as Autodesk, Adobe, PTC Creo, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Maya, and Revit.\

Design and Compute Performance

I'm going to be honest with you right off the bat: there isn't much more I can say about the MSI GT72S notebook that hasn't already been said either on this website or on the PC Perspective Podcast. Though there are many iterations of this machine, the version we are looking at today is known as the "GT72S Dominator Pro G Dragon-004" and it includes some impressive hardware and design choices. Perhaps you've heard of this processor called "Skylake" and a GPU known as the "GTX 980"?

msi1.jpg

The GT72S is a gaming notebook in the truest sense of the term. It is big, heavy and bulky, not meant for daily travel or walking around campus for very long distances. It has a 17-in screen, more USB 3.0 ports than most desktop computers and also more gaming horsepower than we've ever seen crammed into that kind of space. That doesn't make it perfect for everyone of course: battery life is poor and you may have to sell one of your kids to be able to afford it. But then, you might be able to afford A LOT if you sold the kids, amiright?

msi2.jpg

Let's dive into what makes the new MSI GT72S so impressive and why every PC gamer that has a hankering for moving their rig will be drooling.

MSI has launched a pair of workstation motherboards based on Intel's C236 chipset, with support for the new 6th-gen "Skylake" Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 processors.

unnamed.jpg

With the C236A Workstation (ATX) and C236M Workstation (Micro-ATX) boards potential system builders will have a lot of flexibility with enclosure size, and both motherboards support ECC DDR4.

"MSI C236 WORKSTATION motherboards are optimized for professional and industrial use. Advanced PCB design, engineered using industry leading standards and the use of the highest quality components passing the most extreme quality validation, the C236A WORKSTATION and C236M WORKSTATION motherboards guarantee the best in performance and reliability. Designed and optimized for NVIDIA® Quadro® and AMD® FirePro graphics cards multi-GPU setups, equipped with unique Steel Armor and optimal PCI Express slot placement ensure great efficiency and perfect stability for heavy duty computing."

The MSI C236A Workstation Motherboard

The specifications of the two motherboards differ in more ways than form-factor, with the biggest feature set coming from the ATX model (C236A):

  • Supports Intel Xeon E3 v5 series / Core i3 / Pentium / Celeron processors for LGA 1151 socket
  • Supports ECC DDR4 Memory
  • Supports Nvidia Quadro and AMD FirePro professional graphics cards
  • DDR4 Boost
  • USB 3.1 Gen2 (Type-C port, ASMedia ASM1142 Chipset)
  • Turbo M.2 32Gb/s
  • Multi-GPU with Steel Armor PCI-E slots (Supports NVIDIA SLI and AMD Crossfire)
  • Intel I219-V Gigabit LAN
  • Click BIOS 5
  • Military Class 4
  • Overvoltage Protection
  • Windows 10 Ready

c236m.jpg

The C236M Workstation Motherboard

The Micro-ATX model (C236M) looks to be more of a budget option, with differences including lack of M.2 support, no USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C port, and Realtek RTL8111H Gigabit LAN instead of the larger board's Intel NIC. As this is mATX there are only two PCIe slots, which are configured x16/x4.

Pricing and availability were not immediately available.

MSI CPU Guard 1151 Addresses Skylake Bending

Subject: Cases and Cooling | December 16, 2015 - 07:01 AM |
Tagged: MSI Die Guard, MSI CPU Guard, msi

Personally, I am running a Haswell CPU (“Devil's Canyon”). I don't have any experience with building Skylake-based systems. A few of my coworkers at PC Perspective do, though. They seem to think that the issue is a bit out-of-proportion, except maybe in situations where a PC with a large CPU cooler needs to be transported. Also, Morry has used a similar product, the MSI Die Guard, with his delidding project for QuakeCon 2014, and it failed to prevent his die from cracking. Granted, protecting a bare die is much different from bracing a CPU that still has its heatspreader.

Those two issues should be kept in mind, though. We're skeptical of the problem in general and, even then, the one time that we used a similar product, it didn't (entirely) do what it was supposed to. Again, none of these situations involved me, personally.

But now onto the announcement. MSI is releasing the CPU Guard 1151 for new Skylake-based processors. It also works as a “die guard” too, so if you intend on popping the headspreader off, you don't need to choose between two parts. This supposedly works in either scenario. It clamps the processor into the socket, although I can't see how it would do much more than an 1151 socket (and its clamp) itself. MSI did use it during an overclocking competition though, on a delidded Skylake, so there's that.

No pricing or availability are yet available. It could be something to look out for, especially if you haven't installed your processor yet. If you have, you would then need to think about the effort to undo whatever you already have to install this. It's up to you.

Subject: Graphics Cards | December 8, 2015 - 03:56 PM |
Tagged: msi, GTX 980 Ti SEA HAWK, 980 Ti, 4k

[H]ard|OCP recently wrapped up a review of the MSI GTX 980 Ti SEA HAWK and are now revisiting the GPU, focusing on the performance at 4K resolutions.  The particular card that they have tops out at 1340MHz base and a 1441MHz boost clock which results in an in-game frequency of 1567MHz.  For comparison testing they have tested their overclocked card against the SEA HAWK at the factory overclock and a regular 980 Ti at 4k resolution.  Read on to see if this watercooled 980 Ti is worth the premium price in the full review.
