The ASUS Maximus VI Impact is ASUS' newest mini-ITX member of the Republic of Gamer (ROG) family. ASUS integrated design innovations from its Z77-based mITX board and added in some ROG-based innovations to come up with a wholly unique entity. With an MSRP of $229, the Maximus VI Impact comes in at the higher-end of the mITX price range with enough integrated features to more than justify the cost.

Similar to other members of the ROG-based Z87 releases, ASUS designed the Maximus VI Impact board with top of the line power components. The board's digital power system centers on an 8+2 phase power regulation system using 60 amp-rated BlackWing chokes, powIRstage MOSFETS, and 10k-rated Black Metallic capacitors. To save space on the board, the power components are mounted vertically on a hard-attached PCB to the right of the socket with the sound components and wireless networking on vertical removable cards to the upper left of the CPU socket and integrated into the board's rear panel.

Gigabyte trims the Force and the price but leaves the good stuff on the Z87X-OC

Subject: Motherboards | November 26, 2013 - 02:00 PM |
Tagged: gigabyte, z87x-oc, LGA1150

Similar to the Z87X-OC Force that Morry recently reviewed is the Z87X-OC from Gigabyte which will cost you about half as much as the Force.  You give up three PCIe slots, a 16x an 8x and a 1x, but do gain a pair of legacy PCI slots.  As well you lose four SATA 6Gbps ports and the onboard audio codec is slightly downgraded but this makes the board well under $200.  The overall design remains the same, very stable and easy to overclock, enough to win it a Gold Award.

13833581875gOQMQ5Ela_1_9_l.jpg

"GIGABYTE has brought us a few great motherboards over the years with most being just above average. On the surface the Z87X-OC doesn’t have much going for it aside from a Halloween inspired color scheme. All that changes when you dig just a little deeper, as Gigabyte is very much still in the motherboard game."

Hide your CPU under a Dark Rock Pro

Subject: Cases and Cooling | October 25, 2013 - 06:18 PM |
Tagged: be quiet!, Dark Rock Pro 2, LGA1150

The be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 2 is an imposing cooler standing 166mm tall, 147mm wide and 138mm deep (6.5x5.8x5.4") and weighing in at 1.25kg which means not all cases can accommodate it and it will dwarf an mATX board.  The two fans are mismatched, one is 135mm and one is 120mm however [H]ard|OCP's testing proved that does not mean it is a loud cooler.  It's cooling ability is quite impressive and puts it at the top of the chart; unfortunately so does its $90 price tag which is higher than other competitive coolers.  If you can find it on sale it is well worth investing in.

1381863418D3hRaAIB2F_2_6_l.jpg

"CPU air cooling and huge cooler sizes have become synonymous. One thing that is not synonymous with high end air cooling are muted sound profiles. be quiet! looks to remedy this issue with its Dark Rock Pro 2 CPU air cooler that sports a tremendous 220 watt cooling capacity all in that be quiet! package."
