EVGA's 1500W PSU comes with a few strings attached

It is never a good sign when a company does not want to send their hardware to review sites for testing and the ECGA superNOVA NEX1500 Classified PSU is no exception. [H] purchased one out of pocket to test and they what they saw did not impress them very much. One of the less than useful features they found was on the 12V rail, or rather on the eight 12V rails, each of which is rated at 20A. The connectors are certainly impressive, with 16 PCIe connectors, 12 SATA and a very thick power cord, which of course leads to a lot of cable clutter. Add to that the mislabelled PCIe lines and the need to register a user to be able to download the software to try to fix that problem and you can see why [H] failed this drive. At least it didn't burst into flames in the torture test, although it may have caused some hearing loss.
"EVGA did not want to send us one of its 1500W PSU beasts to review, so we went out and bought the $450 behemoth so we could put it through the HardOCP PSU grinder. EVGA clearly states that NEX1500 PSU is all about "no compromises," but we suggest that compromises are exactly what you will be making; more than a few too."

Seasonic's new X-1250 provides pure power satisfaction
Subject: Cases and Cooling | November 13, 2012 - 03:11 PM | Jeremy Hellstrom
Tagged: PSU, kilowatt, seasonic, X-1250, modular psu
Seasonic's new X-1250 PSU can provide 1250W of power, just as the name suggests, with up to 104 amps to the 12V rail which should provide enough power for even the most power hungry GPUs. Instead of going with a single rail design Seasonic chose to provide 4 rails so you should ensure to know which plugs you are using. It passed all of [H]ard|OCP's torture tests with flying colours, making it one of the better kilowatt ckas PSUs they have had the pleasure of testing and when you consider the price, with or without the rebate, it is a perfect choice for users building a system with multiple GPUs.
"Seasonic makes some of the best enthusiast computer power supplies in the world. It has long produced some of the cleanest power producing PSUs along with being some of the quietest on the market. The new fully modular X-1250 sports many enthusiast features and touts gold level efficiency. Is this new X-1250 worthy?"

The second coming of the AX1200, now with software controls
Subject: Cases and Cooling | October 24, 2012 - 05:11 PM | Jeremy Hellstrom
Tagged: PSU, modular psu, kilowatt, Digital Power Supply, Corsair Link, corsair, ax1200i, 80 Plus Platinum
Corsair's new AX1200i PSU is 80 Plus Platinum rated and sports Link monitoring and control software as you might remember from Lee's review. On the off chance that you would like a second opinion about the PSU, [H]ard|OCP recently published their own review. Just like Lee they were impressed with the voltage regulation, efficiency, and DC Output quality though they were less impressed with the noise they saw during their Transient Load Test. They also questioned the use of the Link tweaking software and while the final verdict was positive in some ways they didn't feel this PSU was as true successor to the stellar AX1200 released almost two years ago.
"Corsair has a refresh today that talks to its high end line of high power PSUs. The AX1200i comes in touting "platinum" efficiency and "an unprecedented level of monitoring and performance customization." How does the AX1200i perform out-of-the-box and does it actually bring value at its huge price?"

Enermax hits 1350W and gets rated Platinum as well

If the 1500W EVGA SuperNova PSU that Lee recently reviewed was a little too much for you then how about the Platimax 1350W from Enermax? It sports six 12V rails, two at 20A and the remaining at 30A, a mere eight 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors and 14 SATA power connectors. This PSU is the highest rated 80 Plus Platinum PSU [H]ard|OCP has seen, as well as the highest from Enermax and they were not disappointed. While it shared its design with the MaxRevo 1500W which left [H] a little disappointed, the Enermax implementation was superior and this PSU walked away with an Editor's Choice.
"Enermax is a long standing quality desktop PSU company. It not only specifies and designs power supplies it is one of the few companies that actually build enthusiast PSUs. Enermax today moves it 1350 watt giant into "Platinum" efficiency territory with the new Platimax 1350W."

EVGA's SuperNOVA NEX1500 Classified 1500W PSU is more than just a source of power that would satisfy even a certain stand up comedian turned TV star, it also features some rather interesting extras. Some of the features bear a resemblance to those found on the Corsair AX1200i Digital ATX 1200W which Lee reviewed a short while ago, like programmable rails and software which allows monitoring and control of certain aspects of the PSU. While the 10 year warranty is a good sign, TechPowerUp! found a few questionable results from the tests they ran.
"EVGA's new SuperNOVA NEX1500 power supply packs a great deal of features with the most fascinating being its enormous capacity, reaching 1500 W and up to 1650 W, when overclock mode is enabled. Combined with software monitoring and control, the fully modular design and the sleeved cables this is a PSU enthusiast's dream come true."

The pensive supply unit decides if it will give you power ... and tells you about it

The reason that Corsair's new Professional Series AX1200i is called a digital power supply is due to the presence of a digital signal processor inside the PSU. The advantages are likely to due with the reduced complexity of the internal design than due to the DSP being a miracle, however there is more to it than just smooth voltages. With the USB Corsair Link interface you can use the bundled software to monitor the three main voltage rails, the 24-pin connector's 12V line, the AC voltage at the wall socket and there are current trackers for all of the PCIe power connectors as well. If you obsess over power management and happen to need more than a kilowatt of power, check out Corsair's latest offering at The Tech Report.
"Corsair's new Professional Series AX1200i uses digital circuitry to convert AC to DC power. We take a quick look at the PSU and the software enabled by its DSP."

Seriously short on power? LEPA has a 1600W solution for you
Subject: Cases and Cooling | June 18, 2012 - 08:00 PM | Jeremy Hellstrom
Tagged: kilowatt, lepa, G Series 1600W, 80 Plus Gold
If you have quad SLI/Crossfire, dual CPUs and dozens of hard drives you might find yourself in a position where a 1600W PSU is something you actually need. That is where the LEPA 1600W PSU come in, with 10 eight pin PCIe connectors and 14 SATA connectors as well as numerous molex connectors for your fans. [H]ard|OCP's testing showed that this PSU did deserve it's 80 PLUS Gold rating and more importantly it provided solid power. It sports a decent price, in fact it is almost the same price as several PSUs which are rated at 250W lower. There was something about the unit which kept it from earning a Gold Award but you will have to read the full review to see why [H] decided on Silver for this PSU.
"LEPA is an Ecomaster company and Ecomaster distributes Enermax products and has Enermax design the LEPA PSU line. So what are our expectations from the current ultimate desktop PSU packing a whopping 1600 watts? Should it be better than a four year old 1600 watt power supplies on the market?"

XFX's pricey Platinum ProSeries PSU performs perfectly
Subject: Cases and Cooling | June 1, 2012 - 02:40 PM | Jeremy Hellstrom
Tagged: xfx, ProSeries 1000W, modular psu, kilowatt, PSU, 80 Plus Platinum
With a half dozen modified 8-pin PCI-Express connectors, 8 Molex connectors, and 11 SATA connectors the XFX ProSeries 1000W PSU will handle the needs of a powerful system. The interior components are very similar to the Seasonic Platinum 1000W which is one of [H]ard|OCP's favourites. As with the Seasonic, the XFX PSU carries an 80 Plus Platinum rating which testing proved to be essentially accurate as [H] was not going to quibble about a 0.6% difference on their review model. You have to pay a bit more for this PSU but if you want to pick up a model that won [H]'s Editor's Choice and Gold Award then this PSU is a sure bet.
"XFX has a tremendously impressive track record here at HardOCP when it comes to enthusiast class PSUs. To date, four XFX PSU reviews, three Gold and one Silver Editor’s Choice Awards. Its new 1KW ProSeries PSU features no wires! No not like that, but rather on the inside. Let’s see if SolidLink Technology is award worthy."

FSP goes for Gold with their 1200W Aurum PSU

Tagged: PSU, fsp, aurum pro gold, kilowatt, modular psu
As the name implies, the FSP AURUM PRO GOLD 1200 PSU's efficiency is rated 80 Plus Gold and is capable of an impressive 100A on its single 12V rail. [H]ard|OCP was glad to see that FSP has increased the quality of materials they use in constructing the PSU. This has paid off as the PSU received a Silver Award after passing their torture tests.
"'AURUM' means gold. So today we are showing you the "Gold Pro Gold" from FSP. That is a big name to stand behind. Once past the marketing though, the Aurum Pro Gold looks like a very solid and efficient single rail power supply for the enthusiast needing a heaping supply of wattage in a snazzy looking PSU."

Can CoolerMaster actually provide 1300W of Silent power
Subject: Cases and Cooling | April 3, 2012 - 06:50 PM | Jeremy Hellstrom
Tagged: Silent Pro Hybrid 1300, modular psu, kilowatt, coolermaster, 80 Plus Gold
It seems hard to imagine that a PSU that provides more than a kilowatt of power can be considered quiet but Cooler Master goes even further with their Silent Pro Hybrid 1300 Watt PSU. Rated for 80 Plus Gold and able to provide 1260W @ 105A on its single 12V rail this beast of a PSU and its eight 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors should be able to power any graphics system you might want to dream of setting up. Part of the Silent comes from a unique fanless mode, when load is under 200 watts and the temperature below 25C the fan powers off. The other modes are manual and auto, which anyone with a recent video card will be familiar with. From the 5 year warranty to the solid power that this PSU provides, Hi Tech Legion found a lot of things to like about this premium PSU.
"With the Silent Pro Hybrid 1300 Watt PSU, Cooler Master has actually added usability features to a category typically limited to simply watts and amps. The Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 1300 Watt PSU goes beyond being an 80+ Gold, 105A single 12V rail behemoth, and incorporates a 7V chassis fan rail along with a 5.25” Dual Fan Control Module. After all, if you have need for 1300 watts of power, odds are good you are going to have more than a fan or two running in your case, and what better place to power and control them from than directly from the PSU? In addition to a single-channel, continuously variable controller for up to three chassis fans, the fan control module offers PSU fan control in addition to “PSU Fanless Mode”."
