AMD today announced that the HD7970 GHz Edition will be available on July 16th for a MSRP of $500. As well there will be a 7870 GHz Edition as well, retailing for around $300 which is a rather nice price point for a premium model of the 7870. As far as changes to existing models, the Radeon HD 7970 will be available for $429 and the HD 7950 will be available for $349. While these prices may disappoint early adopters, perhaps the fact that a CrossFire setup has become more affordable will give some comfort.
These new prices will come in conjunction with AMD's "Three-for-Free promotion" which will allow you to choose three DX11 games to acquire for free along with your purchase of a Tahiti based Radeon GPU. For those on a lower budget, the 7870 GHz Edition will net you a free copy of DiRT Showdown.

Get right to the gaming, AMD vs NVIDIA showdown

Ryan pitted the GTX670 and GTX570 against each other to show that in terms of gaming performance the GTX670 is a viable upgrade. [H]ard|OCP did something similar, testing the GTX670 and 680 against the HD7970 in a gaming performance showdown. For those who are only interested in gaming performance they've assembled a great breakdown of four popular games at a variety of resolutions and both at stock clocks and the best OC they could manage. The results are clear, for gamers it is NVIDIA with the clear win, with the GTX670 being a better value than the HD7970 and the GTX680 being a better performer.
"Wondering how the GeForce GTX 680 and GeForce GTX 670 compare to the Radeon HD 7970 and Radeon HD 7950 at stock frequencies as well as overclocked? You ask for it and we have done just that. Hold onto your hard earned cash and take note of just how the new GeForce GTX 670 compares with the rest of the competition."

How does Sapphire's overclocked HD7970 fare against the GTX680
Subject: Graphics Cards | April 13, 2012 - 01:17 PM | Jeremy Hellstrom

In one way, the Sapphire HD 7970 OC Edition wins this competition because of the simple fact that you can actually buy it. However, we are also interested in the performance difference as you can occasionally find a GTX 680 for sale, so we need to know how the overclocked HD7970 performs. Sapphire has placed two separate overclocked BIOSes on this card, one with a 950MHz core and 1425MHz memory as well as a more aggressively set one with a cores of 1000MHz and 1450MHz on the memory. As it turned out [H]ard|OCP was never able to get the more aggressive BIOS to work, on the other hand when they manually overclocked it they hit 1150MHz core and 1860MHz for the memory at which speeds the card triumphed over the GTX 680 in every test. Sapphire's card is ~$75 more than a GTX680 but remember, you can actually buy one.
"The Sapphire HD 7970 OC Edition video card has arrived and brings promise of low temperatures with Sapphires Dual-X Cooling System. It also features a Dual BIOS with both a passive and more aggressive profile. Will Sapphires highest end HD 7970 be able to keep up and compete with NVIDIA's flagship GeForce GTX 680?"

So you want to build an octocore mATX beast?

The mATX ASUS ROG Rampage IV GENE X79 motherboard can hold more power than you might assume from its size, as you can see at VR-Zone. Even though the board looks tiny compared to the heatsink needed to cool the Xeon E5-2690 and the triple slot HD7970 seems to barely fit beside the OZC Revodrive 3 X2 480GB, the components do work at full speed making this beast a real power house. As Yoda said, "Size matters not."
"What if I have about US$5000 to spend - Could I have a true 8-core/16-thread CPU in a small form factor setup without compromising on storage, thermals or online gaming prowess?" Well, we show that we can!"

Feast your eyes on four overclocked HD7970s crushing benchmarks

It would be quite the feat to find a case to contain the system below, with four HD7970s powered by two 1200W PSUs plus other assorted components, not to mention the heat this system will produce. Not even the ASUS MARS 2 in SLI can keep up with this monstrosity and the scaling from a pair of HD7970s is rather impressive as in the past adding the third and fourth card did not lead to large gains. The Core i7-3960X @ 4.8GHz simply can't keep up with the GPUs, implying that this system could actually be more impressive. If you want to see $2200+ of GPUs in action then head to OC3D.
"In combination with ASUS we're rerunning our Quadfire HD7970 test with the benefit of overclocking. Roll up, roll up."

Gigabyte's non-standard HD 7970
Subject: Graphics Cards | February 14, 2012 - 01:54 PM | Jeremy Hellstrom
Tagged: hd7970, gigabyte, factory overclocked
The most noticeable difference on Gigabyte's HD 7970 is the custom cooler, with three fans and a nice shroud, which should keep this card cool and quiet. This is a good thing as the card sports a moderate overclock of 1000MHz on the core though the memory remains at stock speeds. It doesn't need to stay at that speed however, [H]ard|OCP got the card up to 1305MHz for the core and 1605MHz for the memory, 6.42GHz effective. That overclock is quite noticeable in games over both the GTX580 and the stock HD7970 though the performance comes at a price as the card pulls over 100W more than the stock card at full load. For those drooling over the performance remember that these cards are intended to power multiple screens; [H] tested at 2560 x 1600 and if your setup is not of that resolution or higher you are tossing away money at a product you will not be using to its full potential.
"GIGABYTE has a custom cooled and overclocked version of the Radeon HD 7970. We examine how well GIGABYTE's Windforce 3X cooling technology allows us to overclock this next generation video card. Find out how this GIGABYTE GV-R797OC-3GD monster compares to a GeForce GTX 580, a Radeon HD 6970, and reference HD 7970."

The HD 7970 is nice but not nice enough for Kyle and the gang over at [H]ard|OCP who started overclocking the card as soon as they polished off the review at default settings. If they were hoping for a challenge, the card was a bit of a disappointment as they cranked the overdrive frequencies to their maximums of 1125MHz GPU and 1575MHz RAM only to find that the card remained 100% stable. Discouraged but not defeated, they reached out to Sapphire for a custom version of the TRIXX Utility, which allows more control over voltages as well as significantly higher clock speeds. The resulting tests pegged the card at 1.26GHz GPU and 1725MHz for the memory, not too shabby for air cooling!
"We overclock the Radeon HD 7970 in Overdrive and show you what 1.125GHz of performance looks like. Then, we go to the edge and overclock the voltage and take this GPU past 1.2GHz for stellar overclocked gaming performance. We compare this to an overclocked GeForce GTX 580 and see how performance stacks up."

The 7970's are here and some are even customized

[H]ard|OCP got their hands on Gigabyte's first HD7970 and it is a completely custom job, just like we hoped would be the result of AMD opening up the specification limitations for this card. The GPU was given a 75MHz bump to make it an even 1GHz, while the memory remains at stock speeds though obviously will run at a cooler temperature thanks to the three fans. They haven't yet had the time to get into serious overclocking but did confirm that the card runs cooler than the reference model and does so with lower fan speeds, good news for those who want to push this card further.
You can also catch Ryan's take on XFX's HD7970 3GB Black Edition which runs at 1GHz on the GPU and 1425 MHz GDDR5 and also sports a custom cooling solution.
"An early first look at a custom built Radeon HD 7970 based video card. The GIGABYTE GV-R7970C-3GD sports a custom design, custom heatsink, and a custom fan all with an out-of-box 1GHz GPU frequency. The future of Radeon HD 7970 based video cards is looking good. "
