When THQ liquidated their assets, many franchises found new, welcoming parents. One notable purchase was the Homeworld franchise, a space-based real-time strategy that was popular in the late 90's and early 2000's, by Gearbox Software. The deal was valued at $1.35 million USD. They did not sit on the asset either. Within three months, the game developer announced re-releases of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 along with HD remakes, which is now called Homeworld Remastered Collection.
While it missed its original 2014 launch estimate, Gearbox has set a new, more specific date of February 25th. The collection will still contain the two originals, the two remasters, and a Steam beta for the unified multiplayer mode.
Like many classic titles, I missed the original release of Homeworld (minus a few hours at a friend's house -- I was an early teenager at the time). Maybe I will get enough time to give this a chance?

If you never had the chance to play Homeworld and Homeworld 2 then there is some good news you should hear; if you did play them then the news is even better! Gearbox is not just re-releasing the two games they have redone the cinematics, models, textures and effects, plus support for up to 4K resolution. The news at Rock, Paper SHOTGUN makes it sound like some content from mods might be included as well as revamped multiplayer. Maybe they will up the quality to the point where some later levels chug just as hard as they did when you first sat down in front of your mothership.
"We learned last year that Gearbox were planning to re-release the enormously loved Homeworld games. Having plucked the license from the THQ jumble sale, apparently because their Chief Creative Officer Brian Martel has maximum love for the series, they made clear their intentions to release an HD version of the first two games. They’re upping their terminology now, from “HD” to “Remastered“."

Unfortunately, these games slipped past me when first released. Relic, with publisher Sierra Entertainment at the time, wanted a 3D real-time strategy between spacecraft. It was given multiple "game of the year" awards by a variety of reviewers; its sequels, Homeworld 2 and Cataclysm, also received decently high praise from critics.

I am optimistic, if slightly cautious, about the franchise's future. Gearbox has a really strong history of porting and polishing games for the PC; being independent, they can also assert their creative control... most of the time. Two recent examples, Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines, shows the company will not shy away from shipping a turd if the publisher is not careful what they wish for.
On that note, no publisher or release date has been announced and the games are, by no means, damaged goods. It is, also, still anyone's guess how much work Gearbox will even put into the HD versions. Gearbox hits their stride with bonus content, such as their 6 Halo PC maps and two Half Life expansions, and DLC.

Gearbox advertises an enhanced PC experience for Borderlands 2 in the form of a love letter.
It takes a lot of devotion, effort, and trust to make a compelling game for the PC. Apparently Claptrap is willing to take all the time necessary to get into our pants -- or wherever else you carry your credit card. It is somewhat sad how stories like these are newsworthy. This kind-of calls to attention how half-assed most games are these days in general, for all systems, especially when it comes to optimizing for platform-specific traits.
Actually on second thought, maybe we will need some Penicillin.
The list of PC-specific enhancements is quite long, but most entries are based on interface and Steam integration features:
- FOV slider
- “100%” mouse usable menus/mouse wheel scrolling
- Remappable keybindings for keyboard/mouse
- PC specific UI
- Native multiplayer matchmaking
- Push to talk
- Logitech keyboard support ((I assume they mean LCD screen information))
- LAN support (including OFFLINE mode)
- Control pad support
- Integrated v-sync option
- Support for higher resolutions
- Mouse smoothing options (can be disabled completely)
- Cloud save support
- Achievement support
- Friends list support
- No port forwarding required
Is there any feature that you wish would be included for the PC version? Personally I would like the option for splitscreen support especially for those with Eyefinity setups. How about you?
