Don't head out on a wild goose chase when buying a GPU to play Witcher 3

[H]ard|OCP has taken the guesswork out of GPU performance on the current version of Witcher 3 in this round up featuring 10 GPUs, five from each company.  Of course only NVIDIA supports lips occluded by PhysX powered mustachios but not everyone is obsessed with perfect hair.  Indeed when it takes a $1000 video card just to enable the lowest options on HairWorks at 1440p without disabling every other feature one wonders why HairWorks had gamers tied up in knots.  Check out the full review for performance comparisons and even some HairWorks nitpicking.

This weekend also marks the 11th Fragging Frogs VLAN party, which kicks off on Saturday August 29 10:00 AM ET and will go until the last frog has been fragged.  Sign up in this thread if you haven't already and if you are new to the Fragging Frogs follow the links to the FAQ threads for information on which patches or mods you will need to apply to your games to get playing as soon as possible.

"We take The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, using the 1.08.2 patch and latest drivers, find the highest playable settings and examine apples-to-apples performance with and without GameWorks across 10 video cards. We put a focus on NVIDIA HairWorks and how it impacts performance and find out which video cards provide the best gaming value."

At last we have a teaser trailer of Fallout 4, which for a nice change does not look mostly like Skyrim using a colour palette from Doom.  Also possibly exciting is the hint of several vehicles capable of flight, which could add quite a bit to this game if available in the story or with a mod.  The garage shown in the trailer looks to be a home base for the player, albeit one infected with the pernicious crafting system disease if the partially assembled power armour is not simply decoration.  Check out the trailer below and then patiently await the release.

On another note, the 10th Fragging Frog VLAN was a huge success with most of the day seeing 60 or more active participants blasting away in a variety of games including Toxikk which is a fun homage to the old style of online FPSes such as Unreal Tournament.  You can check out what happened as well as see the winners of the prizes which were generously donated by AMD, Fractal Design, Epic Games and even one of our own members right here in this thread on the Forums.

"Aha, now this is promising. We’re clearly looking at the game’s post-apocalyptic present-day rather than a flashback, but there’s tons of colours there. Paint, clearly, can survive the end of the world, and thank goodness for that."

That's right, for those of you who pre-ordered Homeworld Remastered and for anyone that pops by Steam to purchase it, your productivity is in for a serious hit as you try to guide your fleet to a new homeworld and then defend it.  For those lucky and old enough to have played through it originally you will find the look vastly improved and from what Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN and other reviewers have found you will also love the improved interface.  For those who have not had the pleasure of playing through these two games before, the $33 investment is more than worth it, especially with improved multiplayer coming in the near future.  Check out the videos and overview of the poster child for revamped legacy games here.

You will have to take a break this Saturday though, as the Fragging Frogs Virtual LAN party #9 kicks off at 10AM ET and will end when the last frog drops.  You can check out the official thread in the forums right here to get all the information you need to participate.  AMD and other mystery sponsors will be giving away prizes to those who log into and participate in the TeamSpeak channels; not to mention it is the best way to chat in game and in the general lobby.  You can also check out the list of games that will be played as well as links to the mods and patches you will need, please download and install them before Saturday to maximize your playing time.  See you there!

"In terms of strategy games which ‘need’ remastering, Homeworld was probably somewhere at the bottom of the list. But in terms of strategy games which really, truly benefit from remastering – well, this is a chart-topper."

Once again the amazing crew from the Fragging Frogs and our friends at AMD are teaming up to bring you a day of fun, fragging and prizes!  This weekend we also introduce two new friends, Bohemia Interactive Studios, producers of ARMA, DayZ and other games, as well as Innovation Cooling who have both contributed to this event.

If you are not already a member of the PC Perspective Forums you will need to register as a member in order to be eligible to win the prizes given away during the VLAN.  The registration thread is right here, sign your name to be eligible and please read through the links to the guides which explain how to log into the Teamspeak channel, the games that will be played and the patches and add-on files that need to be installed to ensure you spend more time playing and less time downloading.  iamApropos will once again be streaming the action live via TWITCH.TV so even if you can't participate for some reason you can have fun vicariously.  Be sure to thank our game hosts, organizers and sponsors as it takes a lot of time and effort to set these events up.

See you there, in the mean time here is a video to get you even more excited.

With the release of the new GPUs from AMD comes an addition to the Never Settle bundle, aptly named Never Settle Space Edition.  In addition to the games already available on the Never Settle Forever those who buy the new R9 285 will be able to choose from Alien: Isolation, Star Citizen, Space Run and Habit.  You can see a model of the ship that seems to come with Star Citizen at HEXUS.

The Fragging Frogs will be logging in tonight to get in some gaming action after the Podcast, you can see what is planned and make suggestions in this thread on our Forums.

"To coincide with the launch of the AMD Radeon R9 285 graphics cards AMD will augment the Never Settle choices and re-name the bundle as the 'Never Settle Space Edition'. With the newly announced additional quartet of space games AMD graphics card purchasers will have a choice of 31 games to pick though, depending upon what GPUs they buy."

Several rowboats worth of snacks, a couple of canoe-fulls of assorted beverages and boatloads of fun were had this weekend in the highly successful 7th Fragging Frogs VLAN; if you missed it there will be another chance some day but you really missed an epic event.  There were over 120 Teamspeak connections in a variety of channels and an estimated peak of 78 active participants.  Thanks to AMD there is a new game for the Frogs as well as Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare was a hit both to the players and to those watching iamApropos' live stream.  We also gained some ARMA 2 fans which will not only appear again next VLAN but is also in danger of becoming a frequent activity for some members.

Once again there was quite a bit of valuable hardware and software given away, the list includes:

  • AMD Fan Kit (headset, 16 GB USB drive, mouse)
  • AMD Gaming Series RAM - 8 GB of 2133 Mhz
  • MSI Military Class 4 A88XM-E35 FM2+ motherboard *and* A10-7850K APU
  • AMD FX-8350 Processor
  • XFX R9 290 Double D graphics card
  • Several Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare Origin codes

AMD Red Team+

  • Murdered Soul Suspect game codes
  • Sniper Elite 3 game codes

Please stop by this thread to offer your thanks and support for all the hard work put into these events by Lenny, iamApropos, Spazster, Brandito, Cannonaire, AMD and the Frogs in general.

If you haven't yet signed up in the official thread, stocked up on snacks and beverages and reserved all of the weekend for gaming then maybe this will excite you enough to change your plans.

By the way, Play Battlefield 4 Free for a Week. Origin Game Time is On!  It is a rather popular choice with the Frogs so if you don't have it that is no excuse!

You should also consider subscribing to TornTV where you can find a lot of Fragging Frog and PC Perspective action.   There will also be a live stream where you can show off your skills, or lack thereof, to the whole internet!

That's right! It's time for another Fragging Frogs VLAN Party!

Saturday August the 9th you should stock up on snacks and beverages as the seventh Virtual LAN Party kicks of at 10AM EDT and goes until the last member drops!  WarSam can't make it but we are putting pressure on amd_Roy to show up so you can take potshots at one of your favourite vendors.  Once again the prizes will be bountiful but this time they are a secret so if you even want to know what is being given away, let alone win anything you are going to have to show up!  Not only that but you must registered at the PCPer forums and post to this thread to confirm your attendance; we run a very strict pond after all.

The thread also contains the list of suggested games, the IP addresses of servers, a link on how to connect to the (upgraded) PCPer TeamSpeak server and most especially the names of those people you should thank for putting in the massive amounts of effort required to put these events together.  See you there!

Tech Talk

In memory of Kernal_Tom

Tagged: in memorium, fragging frogs

It was a sad day for the Fragging Frogs last Monday (6/16/14) when we lost one of our own, Kernal_Tom, known in the forums as tlemaste. He passed away due to complications from surgery to address his ongoing health issues.  He joined the PC Perspective Forums and the Fragging Frogs over 12 years ago after running into Lenny at his day job.  They became fast friends immediately and Kernal_Tom's great personality and positive attitude ensured he quickly became good friends with all the regular Fragging Frogs as well ... indeed he didn't give you much choice as he was one of the most frequent participants in Teamspeak and gaming nights.

Anyone who knew him and has not yet done so can leave their remembrances and well wishes for Kernal_Tom's wife in this thread in the Forums.  This loss has hit many of us and sharing your memories can be helpful and is very appreciated.  Anyone who wishes to help out his wife please donate to this fundraiser which Lenny has kindly started on YouCaring.  Carol is also unfortunately in a battle to maintain her health and anything you can afford would help her greatly in this next stage of her life.

Show how much you miss Kernal_Tom and remember him the way he would want you to... by showing up at least once a week to game with a Fragging Frog!
