It is a nice change when a company understates the performance of their product instead of barely living up to their promises. Such is the case with the dual channel Crucal Ballistix Tactical 1600MHz kit, at least the one that Funky Kit benchmarked. They hit 2133MHz and kept the timings at 9-9-9-24 1T, not bad for DIMMs which are billed for 8-8-8-24 1T@ 1600MHz! Even better these DIMMs are very low profile, so even on boards with the DIMM slots clustered around the CPU socket you won't be limited in your choice of oversized CPU coolers. The full review is available here.
"This has been some fun memory to play with, it's ability to hit clocks 50% higher than stock is impressive. It's ability to hit 2133MHz with 9-9-9 timings at only 1.5v is quite impressive."

As in comedy, one of the key elements of RAM is the timing

X-bit Labs took five DDR3 kits from Kingston to compare in a handy roundup for those looking to see the difference higher frequencies have on a systems performance. They range from 1600MHz @ 9-9-9-27 to 2400MHz @ 11-13-13-30 and so offer not only a comparison on frequency but also timings. If you read all the way through you can see how these kits compare at base frequencies as well as when they are overclocked; which may have a somewhat noticeable effect on synthetic benchmarks, but not so much on the real world tests.
"Today we are going to talk about memory kits from one of the leading DDR3 SDRAM makers for enthusiasts. Our roundup includes such products as Kingston HyperX Genesis KHX1600C9D3K2/8G, Kingston HyperX Genesis KHX1866C9D3K2/8GX, Kingston HyperX T1 KHX1866C9D3T1K2/8GX, Kingston HyperX T1 KHX21C11T1K2/8X and Kingston HyperX T1 KHX24C11T1K2/8X."

16GB of 1600MHz quad channel DDR3 from Mushkin

While raw speed can be helpful for your memory subsystem, often times tighter timings can have a more noticeable impact, which is what makes Mushkin's Enhanced Redline Ridgeback 16GB kit worth the small premium they charge. It might have a base frequency of 1600MHz but with timings of 7-7-7-24 it has some of the lowest timings we've seen from DDR3. It also allows you more overclocking choices and when Hi Tech Legion loosened the timings to 8-8-8-24 at a frequency of 1969MHz they saw comparable real world performance to their alternative overclock which left the timings untouched and the frequency at 1702MHz. If you are looking for quad channel or high capacity dual channel memory this kit is worth investigating.
"The Mushkin Redline PC3-12800 (994057) 16GB Quad Pack Memory Kit is no different. The Redline 994057 Quad Kit offers the best performance on the market. The 994057 comes with industry leading 7-7-7-24 timings on a 16GB quad channel kit. Along with the fast timings, the 994057 uses high performance Mushkin Ridgeback heatsinks for the best possible cooling. The Redline Quad kit runs at 1.65v and comes with Mushkin's lifetime warranty. All Mushkin memory is hand tested for ultimate quality assurance."

16GB of DDR3-1600? Corsair has a couple of kits for that

With the arrival of quad-channel memory on the X79 chipset, 16GB kits are arriving on the shelves of suppliers. This amount of memory was once only found on servers but why shouldn't you benefit from a huge pool of RAM on your enthusiast machine. Corsair has two Vengeance kits on the market, the $90 Vengeance kit @ 9-9-9-24 and the Vengeance LP kit with low profile heatspreaders and timings @ 8-8-8-24 which will cost you about $150. Interestingly the timings did not seem to effect the benchmarks in a meaningful way, the extra bandwidth available hides the difference though kits with much looser timing may well have an effect. Speed does still matter as there were improvements on most of the benchmarks once the kits were overclocked. Read on to see the numbers.
"Corsair's quad-channel Vengeance memory modules are designed to work with Intel's new Sandy Bridge-E platform. We put two Vengeance kits to the test to see if running DDR3 memory in quad-channel really make all that much of a difference in practical applications like gaming."

VisionTek offers good overclocking and a great warranty; shame about the price

Perhaps the first thing you should notice about Visiontek's Ultimate Performance PC3-12800 CL9 1600EX is that it sports a lifetime warranty if you register it within 30 days of purchasing it. After that the specs naturally follow, DDR3-1600 @ 9-9-9-24 or if you drop to 10-10-10-24 you may be able to hit 1900MHz as Red & Blackness Mods did. Part of that overclock is probably due to the large heatspreaders on the RAM which are effective but could interfere with the installation of a CPU heatsink in some configurations. There is one small problem with this kit, it is priced over $60 which might seem like a good deal for 8GB of RAM ... if you haven't shopped around and noticed that many equivalent DIMMs are available for 20% less.
"Today we are taking a look at a brand new product from Visiontek, the videocard manufacturer has turned their heads on to the memory market. We recieved a sample of their performance ram named “Visiontek Ultimate Performance Pc3-12800 CL9 1600EX”. So how can this brand new ram from Visiontek perform? Lets not waste any time and figure out what kind of performance that we can expect!"

Does Patriot now offer the best deal on DDR3-1600 currently on the market?

According to Legion Hardware the Patriot Gamer 2 DDR3-1600 is the best value on RAM going. They back that claim up with the Gamer 2 1600MHz @ 9-9-9-24 costing only $53 and keeping up with kits costing almost twice as much. They also managed to tighten the timing without lowering the frequency, on an i7-920 they hit 8-8-8-20 and with an X6 1100T they managed 8-9-8-20 which is very impressive for a kit costing less than $60. The full review covers two 8GB kits, the Viper Xtreme Division 2 “PXD38G1866ELK” and the Patriot Gamer 2 “PG238G1600ELKA". Don't spend more on RAM than you have to.
"...when testing we found that the relaxed CL10 timing of the Ballistix Sport memory made it much slower than the Patriot Gamer 2 memory which uses CL8 timing. Therefore in short we believe that the Patriot Gamer 2 is the best value DDR3-1600 memory money can buy and in fact we would go as far as to say it’s the best value 8GB DDR3 memory kit available period."
