XFX wants to show its True Wattage with the XTR 850W PSU

Tagged: xfx, XTR 850W, modular psu, 80 Plus Gold

XFX has a lot of branding on the new XTR series of PSUs including EasyRail, which means it uses a single 12V rail, on this model providing up to 840W @ 70A as well as a "True Wattage" guarantee and 80 Plus Gold. [H]ard|OCP put these claims to the test when they reviewed this PSU and did not find it lacking.  There were a few tests which the PSU did not excel at but when they tested voltage regulation this PSU finished miles ahead of the competition.  [H] also mentions that this unit was previously sold as the Pro Series Gold, the internals of the two are identical as is the serial number so keep an eye out when shopping so you can see if you can get a deal. Also worth noting is the 5 year warranty, it is always nice to see a company stand behind its products.

"XFX is targeting serious gamers and hardware enthusiasts with its new XTR Series of PSU. XFX suggest other power supplies do not always deliver, "The Wattage you see isn’t always the wattage you get." We will certainly find out if that is true with the XTR 850W PSU delivers the power and efficiency it promises in its marketing."

Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 1200W, for when you need 8 PCIe power connectors

Subject: Cases and Cooling | November 3, 2015 - 01:34 PM |
Tagged: PSU, Toughpower, thermaltake, ToughPower Grand 1200W, modular psu, 80 Plus Gold

The Thermaltake Grand series has been around for quite some time and has just been refreshed with a new model and a new price.  The PSU has a single 12V rail, capable of delivering 100% of the wattage at 100A which makes sense for a kilowatt class PSU which has eight 6+2 PCIe connectors.  It is rated at 80 Plus Gold which [H]ard|OCP's testing showed was essentially accurate, their test bed just snuck under the rating at 100% load.  With a 7 year warranty and a $240 price tag it is right in the middle of the pack for PSUs of this power, not perfect but certainly OK.

If you don't need a 1000+ watt PSU then you should revist Lee's review of the Thermaltake Toughpower DPS G 850W PSU.

"Thermaltake is back with a new 1200 watt fully modular PSU. We have used Thermaltake power supplies on our test bench literally for years with excellent results. However the Toughpower line has not always been the best value out there, but today we see a 1200 watt PSU with revised pricing."

SilverStone has a long-standing reputation for providing a full line of high quality enclosures, power supplies, cooling components, and accessories for PC enthusiasts. With a continued focus on smaller physical size and support for small form-factor enthusiasts, SilverStone recently introduced the new SX500-LG. There are currently five power supplies in the SFX Series, ranging in output capacity from 300W to 600W. The SX500-LG is the first one to feature an extended chassis. The SX500-LG enclosure is 30mm (1.2”) longer than a standard SFX chassis, which allows using a quieter 120mm cooling fan rather than the typical 80mm fan used in most SFX power supplies.

3-Compare.jpg

150mm                                130mm                              100mm

The new SX500-LG SFX-L Series power supply was designed for small form factor cases but comes with an ATX adapter plate so it can be used in a standard ATX enclosure as well. In addition to its small size, the SX500-LG features high efficiency (80 Plus Gold certified), all modular flat ribbon-style cables, and provides up to 500W of continuous DC output. The SX500-LG PSU also operates in semi-fanless mode (cooling fan turns off at low power).

Note: We have seen rumors on the web about the new SX500-LG power supply being a re-packaged version of the SX600-G that SilverStone recalled awhile back. Rest assured it is not. The SX600-G is a completely different PSU made by Enhance and the new SX500-LG is made by High Power. And yes, the SX500-LG is officially listed as an 80 Plus Gold certified PSU (10-22-2014).

Here is what SilverStone has to say about the new SX500-LG PSU: “For small form factor enthusiasts, the standard SFX power supply form factor has an excellent combination of size, power, and affordability. At 100mm deep, however, the standard SFX PSU is also limited in fan size to 80mm. While advances in engineering and components have modern high-end SFX PSUs quieter than ever, there is still inherent limitation with 80mm fan’s ability to dissipate heat at maximum loading conditions while maintaining satisfactory noise profile for users sensitive to higher-pitch sounds. With this in mind, SilverStone has released a “lengthened” variation of the SFX form factor called, SFX-L. With 30mm of added depth, a SFX-L power supply has enough room to fit a 120mm fan, thus its maximum load noise can be not only lower in intensity (via slower fan speed), but also lower in pitch (due to larger fan size). The first model to debut in the SFX-L will be the SX500-LG, a 500W model that includes all features available from top of the line SFX SilverStone PSUs such as 80 Plus Gold efficiency, modular flexible flat cables, and semi-fanless capability. An ATX adapter bracket is included as well to enable users to install this PSU into any small or even larger cases that do not have SFX mounting holes.

SilverStone SX500-LG V1.1 SFX-L Series Power Supply Key Features:

Fractal Design and Seasonic team up with Edison M series of PSUs

Subject: Cases and Cooling | February 3, 2015 - 04:30 PM |
Tagged: fractal design, edison m series, PSU, 650W, 80 Plus Gold

Fractal Design's 650W EDISON M Series semi-modular PSU has a bit of an interesting mix of features for a 650W PSU which drive the price up somewhat.  TechPowerUp puts it's MSRP at $105 which is a bit pricey for a 650W PSU which is not totally modular but with an 80 PLUS Gold rating and a 5 year warranty the price is somewhat justified.  The single 12V rail is capable of providing up to 54A to the six 6+2 PCIe power connectors, giving you some ability to power dual GPUs.  In the end, it proved to be a solid performer but the decision to sacrifice a second EPS connector for the additional PCIe plugs and the pricing prevented it from winning an award.  It is still work checking out if you do not need a second EPS plug.

psu_top2.jpg

"Fractal Design has for the first time worked with Seasonic, and the outcome is the Edison Modular series. Today, we will take a detailed look at the Edison M with 650 W capacity, the second-strongest unit of the series. It features Gold-certified efficiency, a semi-modular cabling design, and an FDB fan."

Can the EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 break the trend?

Subject: Cases and Cooling | January 9, 2015 - 03:26 PM |
Tagged: evga, supernova 1300, 80 Plus Gold, modular psu, kilowatt

[H]ard|OCP has not been impressed with EVGA's PSUs; they are not bad but do not tend to match the quality and pricing of the competition.  The new EVGA Supernova 1300 G2 is available for $180 and could buck this trend, it has a 10 year warranty, an 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating and it looks good on paper.  With the ability to provide a hair over 108 amps to its 12V line, eight 6 pin PCIe power connectors of which two can have the extra pair of plugs for 8 pin and solid performance it seems that EVGA has indeed produced a great power supply. [H]ard|OCP does not often award the Gold to PSUs but in this case thanks to the excellent build and power quality along with a very competitive price EVGA has produced a very good product for those who need serious power for their PC.

1417572920xIZRDi5XIp_2_8_l.jpg

"EVGA has a bit of a rocky road with HardOCP when it comes to PSU reviews. Today we give EVGA the opportunity to redeem itself with its 1300 watt powerhouse touting "exceptional efficiency" and a fully modular design that is "silent and optimized for the enthusiast." All this with a 10 year warranty? It must be a badass."
