ATI X700 Pro - Let the Mainstream Battle Begin!

Summary

When NVIDIA released their 6600 series of GPU's everyone knew that ATI wouldn't be far behind with an answer.  The X700 series is it and today we look at what the X700 Pro card offers PCI Express users.

Though based around technology of the X800 line, the X700 core is a completely new design.  It is being released in three versions: the X700, X700 Pro and X700 XT:

The final specs on the XT model were set at 475 MHz core and 525 MHz memory, for those interested.  Let's take a look at a couple quick benchmarks comparing the mainstream cards of NVIDIA and ATI:

On Doom 3, the NVIDIA 6600GT performs better as we would expect but on the Far Cry engine, the X700 and 6600GT are shown here in quite a race.  The X700 Pro seems to be slower through our entire suite of gaming benchmarks, which you can view by reading our detailed review.

With the same $200 price tag as the NVIDIA 6600GT card, the mainstream market is getting ready to heat up as the competition collides in mid-field.  In our NVIDIA 6600 review, we said it just had no compeition and was all on its own.  ATI heard the call and answered back quickly.
